Breaking up sucks and nothing can prepare you for the pain of missing your ex – even if you know you are better off without them. Thankfully, we have some tips for dealing with missing your ex.
Make a list of what you miss about them. You will probably discover that it is not them you miss, but how they made you feel. You miss the romantic dates and the cute texts and the nights in front of the TV – but those are not exclusive to your ex. Remind yourself that they are not the only person in the world who can give you those feelings.
Your friends will have been there throughout your entire relationship with your ex and they have seen the best and worst of both of you. They will know why the relationship did not work out. Talk to them, tell them you miss your ex, and they will very quickly remind you of why you broke up. They are also usually quite happy to take your phone away if you threaten to call your ex in front of them.
It can be so tempting to go looking on your ex’s social media to see what they have been doing since you broke up – but this is a terrible idea and will only make you feel worse. The chances of your ex posting sad breakup memes and talking about how much they miss you are pretty small. Even if they are heartbroken and crying into their pillow at night, they are not going to display that publicly. Seeing their Instagram covered in photos of them having a great time with their friends is just going to upset you.
There’s nothing worst post-breakup than seeing reminders of your ex all over the place. Whether it is photos of them on your Facebook or texts from them on your phone, it will make you miss them more. Clear away those reminders. Delete the photos, erase the texts, and put all their belongings and gifts in a box. Remove them from your life completely.
Relationships take up a lot of your time, and sometimes your hobbies will suffer because of it. Now that you have some free time on your hands, you have the perfect opportunity to take up a new hobby! Is there something you have always wanted to do but never had the chance? Do it now! Channeling your energy into a hobby will stop you from feeling that pain of missing your ex.
One of the downsides of being in a relationship is that you can become too consumed with your partner and lose focus on yourself. When was the last time you did something that was specifically for you? Spend some time reacquainting yourself with who you are. Listen to your favourite music, binge a TV show you love, go for a walk… Soon you will reconnect with yourself and remember who you were before your partner.
Sometimes when you are missing your ex, you tell yourself that just one phone call will make you feel better. It won’t. All it will do is set you back to the day you broke up and make you miss them more. You need to go cold turkey from this person. No calls, no texts, no drunk snaps. Distance yourself from them as much as you can until they become nothing but a memory.
If you really want to talk to them, this is the best way to do it. Write a letter to them pouring out all your feelings and telling them everything you wish you could say to them. Make it as long and expressive as you want. Put your heart into it. Cry whilst writing it. Then tear it up. Shred it and throw it away. Let that be your final communication with them. Now you can let them go.
