10 Healthy Snack Ideas That Any Student Can Make

When the afternoon hunger pangs kick in, it can be hard not to reach for the Doritos. So, I put my oven-mitts on to put some homemade healthy snack recipes to the test. After many tries (and fails), I’ve compiled a list of my favourite affordable healthy snack ideas. Tuck in!

1. Roasted chickpeas

Don’t knock ’em ’till you tried ’em. These crunchy chickpeas are ridiculously easy to make (if my Dad can make them, so can you), and are packed with protein to keep you fuller for longer. Find the recipe here.

2. Homemade vegetable crisps

Yup, you read that right. Crisps. Crisps that are actually good for you. Click here to find the recipe.

3. Sweet potato toast

Bread is soooo last year. For those of you who haven’t yet discovered the blessing that is sweet potato toast, you’re in for a treat. Simply slice a tattie into 1cm slices, pop in the toaster and leave until soft. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.

4. Homemade popcorn

Your favourite cinema snack, but with a healthy twist. While your local Odeon cover their corn with heaps of sugar, salt and fat, making your own is a great way to keep tabs on the additives. Find the recipe here.

5. Carrots and hummus

To call myself a hummus addict is an understatement: I just can’t get enough of the chickpea goodness. Swapping your pita for carrot batons is an easy (and may I add, delicious) way to save on calories, with the added benefit of extra nutrients.

6. Banana nice cream

You won’t believe this ice cream alternative is actually good for you. ‘Nice cream’ has caused waves on the foodie scene for several years, and with good reason. Simply blend a frozen banana and tah-dah: you’ve got yourself an uber-healthy dessert!

7. Banana oat cookies

The banana is back, but this time it’s all about the cookies. You only need two ingredients for this protein-packed snack.

8. Fruit salad

A true classic, the humble fruit salad is not to be overlooked. Simply chop up for favourite fruits, place in a bowl, and pour over some orange juice and a squirt of lemon. Deliciousness ensues.

9. Frozen yoghurt drops

No need to pop to a fro-yo joint for your next frozen fix: these frozen yogurt drops are cheap-as-chips and easy to prepare.

10. Homemade kale chips

Hailed as a ‘super food’, kale has become a staple for health-gurus and food bloggers alike. A scrummy way to your 5-a-day is this quick and easy recipe. This is one of my fave healthy snack ideas.
