10 Things You’ll Relate To If You’re Growing Up With An Unusual Name

Check out these things you will definitely relate to if you spent your childhood growing up with an unusual name that no one else had.

Years of people getting your name wrong and so many nicknames you’ve lost track. Growing up with an unusual name is hard guys, but don’t worry I’ve compiled this list for you to relate to.

1. Never getting any souvenirs with your name on

You know those cute little souvenirs you get on holiday like fridge magnets, bracelets, keyrings that had names on? Well with an unusual name you never had the joy of finding your name on one of those things. That didn’t stop you from looking though.

2. No one ever pronouncing your name right

You’re so used to people saying your name wrong that you’ve learned to respond to anything that sounds remotely similar. You also try to say your name slowly and clearly when meeting someone new to avoid awkward mispronunciations. This is another thing you went through while growing up with an unusual name.

3. Automatically spelling your name out when asked

When you’re on the phone or in any situation where someone has to write your name down you automatically spell it out for them rather than letting them attempt to spell it. It’s easier for the both of you really.

4. The substitute teacher always getting your name wrong

You dreaded that awkward moment when you had a substitute teacher in school and they always paused on your name in the register. You probably just yelled here before they attempted to say it and created a horrific new nickname. This is another thing you went through while growing up with an unusual name.

5. Meeting someone with the same name and freaking out

If you ever came across someone with the same name as you, you would literally freak out. You’d also feel a little weird about it, it’s your name, no one else’s. You’re kind of precious about it.

6. Never having any trouble choosing a username

You never had any trouble choosing a username because your name was never taken. Whilst everyone else had to put random numbers and symbols at the end of theirs you got to keep it nice and simple. This is another thing you went through while growing up with an unusual name.

7. Always being asked why your parents gave you your name

Whenever meeting someone new, they would always ask you why your parents gave you your name or who you’re named after. I don’t know why, maybe they just wanted to give me a lifetime of people getting my name wrong and having to answer this stupid question.

Another thing you’ve had to get used to is people spelling your name wrong. You usually end up with all sorts of weird spellings, especially on birthday cards. It’s always a nice surprise to you when someone new spells it right first time without you having to correct them.

9. The difficulty of ordering a drink in Starbucks

Knowing that no matter how many Starbucks you order or how many different baristas you tell your name to, that not one of them will get it right. You’ll sadly never had an instagramable cup with your name spelt right.

10. Spell check never recognising your name

Receiving texts from your friends where they’ve attempted to use your name and spell check has turned it into some strange word has become the norm. You’ve actually grown to find it quite amusing. This is another thing you went through while growing up with an unusual name.
