GRAMMY Fashion 2019: The Reviews Are In
The 2019 GRAMMY Awards happened on Sunday, February 9th and it is time to relive the GRAMMY Fashion of the biggest night in music! Fashion is quite possibly the most talked about element of any award show. Beyond performances and tributes, red carpet fashion is what everyone is eager to see.
Without further ado, let’s dive into the most memorable looks of the night!
Janelle Monae
Janelle Monae dominated the red carpet with her futuristic look by created by Jean Paul Gaultier.
Everything about her look makes for a memorable GRAMMY Fashion moment. The big, pointy shoulders look is complete with a tipped square headpiece. The dress itself has an elegant flow to it despite how otherworldly it looks due to the other eye-catching elements. The pointy shoulders take padded shoulders look to a new level by elevating the look but also giving it a futuristic feel, which matches her whole vibe this past year. The headpiece is very unique in both it’s shape and jewel details that cover her head. It adds class and sparkle to the look and provides an extra edge.
Monae has grown in her artistry this past year and this outfit perfectly reflects her creativity and risk-taking nature.
H.E.R
H.E.R stunned on the carpet in this sparkly Coach number.
The impression she has made on the music industry due to her air of mystery makes H.E.R even more alluring as you can never be quite sure what to expect.
She turned up in a bedazzled playsuit with her signature look, her sunglasses, in tow. She dazzled everyone with this very modern look and ended up taking two GRAMMY awards home on the night for R&B.
There is no telling what she will wear next but we’re sure that she doesn’t play by anyone’s rules but her own when it comes to how she expresses herself.
Camila Cabello
Camila Cabello wore a custom Armani Prive dress on the carpet.
As the opening act for the show and one of the biggest ladies in the business right now, she had to make an impression.
This beautiful pink dress showed her figure and kept it classy as the award show got underway. The brightness of the pink really set the tone for what was to come with her West-Side-Story-inspired performance which featured many colorful looks from her dancers, really taking over the show in a sea of rainbow.
She sadly walked away with no awards on the night but her career is only beginning. She still had one of the best performances of the night (featuring special guests) and dazzled the red carpet with her mature but still youthful look.
Bebe Rexha
Bebe Rexha wore a layered tulle look by Monsoori on the red carpet.
This gown made Bebe the belle of the ball, dominating the carpet with both its size and bold color.
After a struggle finding designers to dress her due to her size, Bebe found a designer that not only dressed her but accentuated all of her assets too.
The dress shows off her figure in a self-assured and confident way. She is unapologetic for being a bigger girl in the industry and will not let designers hold her back from showing off the body she is proud of.
Kudos to Monsoori and Bebe for choosing such an ambitious and loud look for the carpet to really announce her presence to the world.
Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa opted for a Versace dress with a train that really took over the red carpet on this big night for the singer.
After a successful year in music, Dua Lipa took to the carpet in this very classic fitted dress complete with a long train following after her.
The overlapping detail on the bodice is so typically Versace and hugs Lipa’s body perfectly to give her a sleek silhouette. The shimmering skirt is both classy and exciting for a black tie event, combining the element of glitter and the sophisticated silhouette for an award-show-ready look.
The singer walked away with two Grammys, one being for best new artist, really establishing her as one to watch in the coming year.
BTS
BTS showed up wearing classic suits by Jaybaek Couture.
Every designer was lining up to dress the group due to their high profile attendance and ability to go viral instantly. However, they opted for a Korean designer instead. The choice to stick with a Korean designer sends a message. They are establishing that they are Korean and therefore will be representing their identity through their clothes. It also gives the limelight to a Korean brand at a huge event within music. Among all the big luxury designers other stars were wearing, they chose to stand out and do what they felt was best in terms of representing who they are and where they came from.
They made their entrance in a coordinated black suit and white shirt combos, with some variations in accessories. From pocket squares to bow ties to glasses, these small details set the outfits apart from one another and give each member their own element to showcase on the red carpet.
It may be a black tie event but their colourful heads provide a contrast, showing off a fun side to them as well s their outfit choices. They certainly know how to rock a carpet.
Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton graced the red carpet in a bright red dress complete with matching heels.
The country darling shines in this bold bedazzled look complete with red shoes that might be a nod to the Netflix original Dumplin, a movie about beauty pageants and characters with a love for Dolly Parton.
Although Dolly may not be as big in the mainstream music scene as she used to be, she left a huge impression on the award show with both her presence and performance. Recently she had been honoured for her artistry and she looks thrilled to still be a loved figure in the music industry.
We can’t help but love this country legend and her bold and beautiful looks.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga arrived on the red carpet wearing a sleek Celine dress.
Having already won awards at the GRAMMYs and BAFTAS all before hitting the red carpet, she started her night on a high.
Silver was a popular feature of GRAMMY Fashion on the night and Lady Gaga definitely got the memo, already looking like a winner in her silver form-fitting dress by Celine with some ruffle detail on the side.
A more understated look for the star but very fitting considering the A Star Is Born nominations she was up for, launching her acting career.
A star truly was born from this film and her dress also reflects that.
Cardi B
Cardi B turned up in a Thierry Mugler dress in the shape of a clam.
A very bold look from Cardi B and, honestly, were we expecting anything but extraordinary from her?
She makes a statement on the red carpet in a gown shaped like a clam while covered in pearls. Reports state that she decorated her outfit herself, adding small details such as roses to her dress.
She channels a Botticelli art piece in this look, showing off her artistic and knowledgeable side by giving a nod to his famous works featuring the Goddess Aphrodite. She makes art out of herself and embodies the Goddess, confidently turning up at the award show ready to have an amazing night.
Cardi looked great and went on to have a successful night at the show, winning in the rap album category and giving a performance that had everyone talking for days to come.
Post Malone
Post Malone rocked the carpet in this custom Post Malone and Catherine Hahn creation.
A very unexpected look from Malone. He rocked the carpet in a custom baby pink, a western inspired outfit which he himself had a hand in creating. Malone has been known for some pretty wild looks in the past and it is commendable that he feels confident and comfortable enough to experiment with his own personal style in such an active way.
It is hard to discredit his attention to detail when he turns up in a bedazzled pink look at the biggest award show in music.
He may not have won any awards but he certainly won over the red carpet.
Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez attended the award show in this Ralph & Russo dress complete with a wide-brimmed hat.
Before her Motown tribute, it was her red carpet hat that drew all of the attention from crowds.
Compared to past Grammy fashion from JLo, Lopez chose to keep it simple with a light grey Ralph & Russo dress with embellishing while her hat provided to be a statement piece to tie her look together. Not the first choice in accessories with such a sophisticated gown but not a bad choice either.
When asked about the hat, she simply said that she liked it.
Fair enough, J.Lo. We like it too.
Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus wore a simple yet elegant Mugler suit to the GRAMMYs.
This suit mixes oversized and fitted styles all in one. The waist is nipped in whereas the shoulders stand out as do the lengthy sleeves. Her pants also go into a flare which pairs nicely with her diamond sandals for the occasion.
Miley chooses to be bold and go without a shirt with this look, keeping the focus on the suit itself rather than providing distractions.
The masculine and feminine elements in this outfit blend together to make something which is so authentically Miley in that she loves to be fluid and does not want to be defined by any one thing.
She really owns who she is and this outfit is a testament to that.
Katy Perry
Katy Perry turned up in a very unique look by Balmain.
The bustier features an ombre silver which bleeds into baby pink, which then leads into a large poof skirt. The look itself gives off a very floral vibe.
The layered skirt is quite the look. The award show saw many elegant looks but this one decided to be different and stand out of the crowd with its design choices and overall vibe.
Perry looks ready for spring with this baby pink poof dress and owns the look despite how bold it might be.
