10 Reasons We’re Glad The World Cup Is Over

This year was probably the first year I actually got pretty involved in the World Cup – I did a sweep with my family and pulled out Germany so was convinced I was going to win. I was always keeping up to date with the matches, with the incentive of taking home the winnings (a whopping £35), but I can’t deny there were some things which make me glad the World Cup is finally over, and I’m sure I’m not alone. It’s rare that a tournament can captivate the full globe more or less, and as nice as it was to witness international recognition for the countries competing, we’re ready to revert back to reality. On that note, here are 10 reasons we’re glad the World Cup is finally over!

1. We Can Watch TV Again

The World Cup quite literally dominated night-time and day-time TV for a full month, and if they weren’t showing matches they were showing people talking about said matches. It was inescapable!

2. People Will Stop Complaining

Complaining about their team losing, complaining about their other team losing, complaining about pubs being so busy, complaining to complain…whether you were personally invested or not in the World Cup, I’m sure you know someone who was moaning on a daily basis about the inevitable effects of the tournament.

3. We Can Finally Talk About Something Else

For the full duration of the World Cup the majority of ‘small talk’ was devoted to discussing the highlights and what had happened so far. There was almost a pressure to be up to date with the latest matches at fear of losing out on conversation!

4. No More Being Patronised About The Rules Of Football

I’ll admit it, I couldn’t break down the rules of football if someone asked me to, but you know what? Who cares! I can still watch a match and enjoy it without knowing 100% what’s going on…and I don’t need to be lectured about my apparent ignorance either.

5. No More Post-Win Celebrations

I’m sorry England fans, but invading Ikea after beating Sweden in the quarter-final, really? How on earth does starting a riot in a Swedish department store translate as celebrating your country’s win? If there’s one thing I’m really glad for about the World Cup being over it’s that the often disrespectful and riotous post-victory celebrations also must come to an end.

6. No More Unnecessary Rivalries

Having quite a lot of foreign friends in various countries, I didn’t really enjoy the unnecessary rivalry that came as a result of the World Cup. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of competition, but being knocked out of the World Cup appeared to be soul-destroying for some, automatically blaming the opposing team/country…

7. We No Longer Have to Pretend To Be Interested

We can go back to our normal interests, talking about the next big Netflix series’ and the latest on Love Island.

8. Love Island Won’t Be Delayed By Extra Time Anymore

It’s common fact that even football fanatics watch Love Island, and we didn’t appreciate the World Cup interfering with the airing time of our summer addiction.

9. We Can Forget About The World Cup Sweeps

I’m sure everyone has lost at least a fiver to the World Cup, and maybe you pulled out an unlikely winner from the start so never had hope of getting that money back. The good thing is, you won’t be forced to bet again for another 4 years.

10. You Can Enjoy Drinking In The Pub Again

OK, the atmosphere can be kind of exciting, but we also appreciate being able to enjoy a drink without screaming football fans getting emotional in the corner. TV’s in pubs are generally not very desirable anyway, whatever time of year.
