If you’re ever stuck for ideas on fun drinking games to play before you hit the town, look no further. It’s safe to say there’s nothing worse than sitting with a group of people you don’t know very well and running out of conversation, knowing full well that you’ll be with them until 4am the next morning. If small talk just isn’t cutting it, it’s likely drinking games will. They’re not only fun, but a great way to break the ice and let your hair down a little around both new people and familiar faces.
Definitely a personal favourite, Piccolo is proving to be increasingly popular with uni students. It does require you to download the app, but this doesn’t take long and is definitely worth it; you’re guaranteed to be laughing all night long. As a group or one by one you are asked to either answer a question or follow instruction, and there’s a lot of variety – one second you might be told to down your drink, the next you might be asked to act like a slug for 5 seconds or take two sips. An incredibly simple drinking game to play, it often leads to a lot of funny stories to tell afterwards!
Possibly one of the most famous drinking games, Beer Pong is a great one to play if you’re looking to get bevved quickly. Simply place some plastic cups containing the drink of your choice (it doesn’t have to be beer) in the shape of a triangle on opposite ends of a table. Split yourselves into two teams and one by one throw a ping pong ball across the table, trying to ensure it lands in a cup. If it does, a player from the opposite team must drink the drink. It’s not quite as easy as it sounds, especially after a few, but if a bit of luck is on your side you’ll be winning in no time!
If you’re a lover of playing cards, this one’s for you. All you have to do is get your friends to gather around a table and lay out some cards in a circle around a cup, ensuring they are faced down. Everyone should have a drink in hand at the ready. One by one, you have to pick a card, where each one already has an established rule; for example, 2 means ‘Choose’, so you must choose someone to drink. These do take a while to remember at first, but if you play it enough you’ll eventually get the hang of it.
This one is definitely like Marmite – you’ll either love it or hate it – but it’s extremely simple. Take it in turns to say ‘Never Have I Ever…’ before completing the sentence with a phrase of your choice. For example, it might be ‘Never Have I Ever played Never Have I Ever’ (that’s if, you’re feeling tame), and if you actually have played Never Have I Ever before, you must drink. To some, it involves stepping out of their comfort zone as they’re forced to respond to questions that make them feel uncomfortable. For others, it’s a sure way of finding out the goss, which makes it one of the more exciting drinking games.
It really doesn’t get much simpler than this, and, like Never Have I Ever, is great if you don’t have access to an app or a pack of playing cards. Take it in turns to count to 21 by saying one to three consecutive numbers at a time – the aim is to avoid being the person who has to say ’21’. If you are, then you have to take a forfeit of another player’s choice. This is a great one for those of you who can stay logical even after a couple of drinks!
