You’ve planned a big day out with friends, you’re all eager to go to the park, or to hit the high streets. Then, out of nowhere thunder rolls in and the sky gives way to an absolute tropics worthy storm. Sound familiar? You can still make a great day out of staying indoors with your friends as long as you have some board games on hand. Here are five incredibly fun board games you and your friends can play that’ll get you all the way through those autumn showers.
Many a day, evening and night (and sometimes way into the early hours of the morning) have been spent with my friends playing Catan. Own the most settlements, create the longest roads, coerce your friends into giving you a good deal for their resources until you gain 10 victory points and win the game.
With its strange hexagonal shape, Catan is a game that sticks in peoples minds long after they’ve played. It’s is one of the board games for players who are in it for the long run. It could take as little as half an hour, or it could take all night. There’s no telling with Catan!
When it comes to word-making board games, there’s always two on everyone’s lips. Scrabble, or Boggle. For Boggle, the aim is to try and come up with as many words as possible in the allotted amount of time. Make sure you come up with a few long and interesting words too that no one else has for extra points.
Boggle is a game that can be played over and over again without a defined ending, which makes it perfect for a rainy day. While you’re waiting for the rain to die down you can spend rounds upon rounds scrambling the letters and creating new words and seeing who can get the most points each game.
“Four little questions, one big link” is the motto here. Linkee is a game for the eager trivia kings and queens with the aim of the game focusing on discovering the answer that links up the four questions on the card. It’s sweet, simple and so addictive.
Linkee was a backdoor product of three mates sick of trivia games that were too difficult or too outdated (I’m looking at you Trivial Pursuit…). So, they decided to make their own AND, in newer versions, get everyone else involved too! You can submit questions to be included in new sets!
Trivia knowledge- with a little twist. Instead of only having your general knowledge on random trivia to rely on to gain points, you can also rely on betting skills and knowledge of the players to get you points too.
Sort of like Linkee, iKnow works in a three-tier question-one answer system with people betting on how many questions they’ll need to get the right answer. The fewer questions you need, the more points you gain. With four general topics and a ridiculous number of cards, this game can be played for hours on end! (The box and board have a very sleek design too)
Just remember, everything you and your friends say is absolute garbage. Similar to board games like dictionary, balderdash is about creating definitions and fun factoids for words no one has heard of. Points are awarded depending on how many people you can trick into thinking your answer is correct. Bonus points are awards if your answer is considerably close to what the actual answer is.
Or, if you’re like me and my friends, you award points for how interesting or funny you found someone’s answer, kind of like a Cards Against Humanity and Balderdash mash-up.
