How To Find Your Skincare Routine Without Wasting Money
Sometimes, it can be overwhelming how to find your skincare routine, skincare is huge at the moment and not only is it “trending”, but it’s super important. From Glossier’s “Skin First, Makeup Second” motto, to the depths of “Skincare Twitter”, everyone has an opinion on what you should be slapping on your face morning and night. But, with so many different views flying around, how are you supposed to find the skincare routine that’s right for you without getting lost in the fray? And most importantly, how to find the perfect skincare routine without wasting money? These 9 tips and tricks will turn you into an expert – with flawless skin – in no time!
1. Work Out Your Skin Type
Oily, dry, combination, or normal. These are the four main skincare types, and you will fall into one of these. It’s really important to know which you are before designing your routine or purchasing any products – a light moisturiser designed for oily skin isn’t going to do much if you have dry patches, for example. There are tons of tests online to work out which is your skin type – get googling! Finding out your skin type is the first step to figuring out how to find your skincare routine- and the perfect one that works for you!
2. Start With The Basics
Cleanse, tone, moisturise. When you’re trying to experiment with how to find your skincare routine, these are the three most important steps; and provide a solid foundation for anything else you decide to add. Find a cleanser, a toner, and a moisturiser designed for your skin type, and you’re on your way!
3. Pick A Serum
The first extra product you should add to your basic skincare routine is a good serum. Serums are great as they are ingredient-rich and potent, meaning they can help with any specific skincare woe you may have – be it acne, redness, or uneven skin tone, there are a ton of options out there.
4. Talk To An Expert
You don’t actually need to spend any money or go for a facial to get an expert’s opinion on your skin! Your local department store should have very knowledgeable staff working on their skincare counters, who will be more than happy to help, answer any questions, and point you in the right direction. Take advantage of their expertise!
5. Do Your Own Research
Before you purchase any product, research it online – that means reading the reviews from real people! To make sure you don’t waste your money when finding your skincare routine, it’s important to gauge how products have worked for other people, and not just influencers who are often paid to hype things up. It doesn’t matter if it’s hailed on Insta as the product that will change your life – if the reviews are bad, it’s probably bad!
6. Get Some Samples!
Test drive your skincare routine! Most brands are more than happy to send out free samples, or give them to you in store. It doesn’t make sense to buy the products outright without making sure they work for you first – especially if you have sensitive skin – as if they don’t you could end up wasting your money.
7. Find The Dupes
Dupes are my favourite thing ever, and with skincare dupes you can really save some cash. Check the ingredients of the fancy products you want – can you find a cheaper product with the same ingredients online? (Pssst… Check out The Ordinary…)
8. Check How Much You’re Getting
A great way to save money on your new skincare routine is to compare not prices, but product per pound. Check how much products is actually in that bottle – you may think you’re getting a bargain, but if you’re going to have to buy a new one in a week it’s not worth it!
9. Consistency Is Key!
Skincare experts say that it can take up to six weeks for a new routine to take effect – so if you’re not seeing results straight away, don’t give up. Consistency is the most important thing in any skincare routine – as long as you follow it daily, you shouldn’t have to spend a load of money and you’ll be glowing inside and out!
