15 Film Quotes To Live Your Life By

We’ve all watched films and heard an exceptionally good line that touched our hearts. Whether it was the inspirational story of Rocky Balboa or the never-ending determination of Maximus in Gladiator.

Film quotes are an amazing way to live your life by, because you’re probably not the only one who’s been moved by the particular quote.

Here is a list of 15 film quotes to live your life by!

1. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Directed by the spectacular John Hughes and starring Matthew Broderick as the titular character, the films follows the antics of high schooler Ferris Bueller who is determined to skip school. A self-explanatory line from the film that makes you want to cherish every moment.

2. 10 Things I hate About You (1999)

“Don’t let anyone make you feel like you don’t deserve what you want.”

A legendary film that we’ve all seen at least once (or should’ve), the line is delivered by Heath Ledger’s character Patrick Verona. It reminds us all to go for what we want, no matter what anyone has to say about it. No matter who stands in our way.

3. Lady Bird (2017)

“Some people aren’t built happy, you know.”

Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut delivered an intimate look at a mother-daughter relationship that was raw to its core. The protagonist’s best friend, Julie, is the voice for us all. It’s okay not to be okay, and we shouldn’t fake it.

4. Call Me By Your Name (2017)

“We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster than we should that we go bankrupt by the age of thirty and have less to offer each time we start with someone new. But to make yourself feel nothing so as not to feel anything – what a waste!”

Michael Stuhlbarg delivered an honest speech about life, love and loss, as well as the people we grow up to be. It is the ugly truth that allows us to feel everything, because every moment with someone is precious.

Michael Stuhlbarg should have received a supporting actor nomination at the Oscars and that’s that.

5. American History X (1998)

“Hate is baggage. Life’s too short to be pissed off all the time. It’s just not worth it.”

Incredible performances by both Edward Norton and Edward Furlong. A story that is relevant even in 2019, American History X brings to our attention the fact that we shouldn’t hold onto hate. It just wears us down and it’s unnecessary.

6. Never Let Me Go (2010)

“It had never occurred to me that our lives, which had been so closely interwoven, could unravel with such speed. If I’d known, maybe I’d have kept tighter hold of them and not let unseen tides pull us apart.”

Carey Mulligan’s character, Kathy, reassures us that we are all scared of life moving too quickly. We are all terrified of losing everything in the blink of an eye. Which is why we should always pay attention to each other and our surroundings, because one day we won’t be here to admire it.

7. 20th Century Women (2016)

“Whatever you think your life is going to be like, just know, it’s not gonna be anything like that.”

A fantastic film, that should be viewed not by just every woman, but by everyone so we can see the different sides to each other. This phrase brings us hope, because although it seems like the future is scary, it’s not a bad thing. Change is good and the perceptions of ourselves aren’t always true.

8. The Diary Of A Teenage Girl (2015)

“So, maybe nobody loves me. Maybe nobody will ever love me. But maybe it’s not about being loved by somebody else.”

We’ve all been scared of not finding someone who will love us, or scared that we might be alone forever, but that’s not important in this life. It’s not about people loving us, but rather about us loving ourselves.

9. Black Swan (2010)

“Perfection is not about control. It’s about letting go.”

For all those perfectionists and people obsessed with control, whether it’s control in our lives or other people, let it go. The liberation of letting go brings you new found pride in yourself and you will begin to realize that you can’t be restrained by yourself all the time. You can’t try to control everything and expect it to be perfect.

10. Stuck In Love (2012)

“My biggest mistake was thinking you could fix me. Only I can fix me.”

If you’ve ever expected someone to fix you or help you mend yourself, you have to remember that relying on someone for the rest of your life won’t help you in the end. Instead, it will limit you. At the end of the day, only you know yourself and help yourself in order to be the best version of yourself.

11. Pump Up The Volume (1990)

“Feeling screwed up in a screwed-up place in a screwed up time does not mean that you are screwed up.”

Whatever you may think is going on in your life, the world around you or inside your head, this does not mean that you yourself are a product of your environment. We might go a little crazy in this world, but just remember that it’s a fleeting feeling.

12. In A Relationship (2018)

“My philosophy is that if someone is not being nice to you, then you fucking drop them.”

First premiering at Tribeca Film Festival, Emma Roberts’ character delivers one of the most important lines in the film in regards to the people around us. If someone isn’t treating us the way we want to be treated, then we have to cut them off. Toxic people should not take up room in your life.

13. The Incredible Jessica James (2017)

“You shouldn’t need other people to validate or define you.”

Whoever says Netflix originals aren’t worth the hype, then they really haven’t seen a Netflix original. Jessica Williams who stars as Jessica James befriends a guy while still dealing with her break-up. It prompts us to remember that we are our own person and do not require other people’s opinions of us.

As long as we’re happy with ourselves, then that’s all that matters.

14. Garden State (2004)

“I’m not saying I don’t cry. But in between, I laugh. And I realize how silly it is to take anything too seriously.”

A beautiful story of friendship, love and loss that urges us to capture every second of our lives. We are made of so many emotions, that we can’t allow the negative feelings to overcome the positive ones. It’s okay to let ourselves feel, as long as we remember to laugh once we’ve done that.

15. Frida (2002)

“At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think.”

Whenever we think that we can’t go on anymore, or we’ve handled as much as we can, we ought to take a step back and realize that we are made of steel and titanium and our hearts are unbreakable. There is always more that we can give and take, because we are stronger than we think we are.
