When it comes down to choose a favourite fashion season, summer is always on top. You can literally wear so many accessories and show them off in a way that during winter you can’t. Now, I have always struggled to find one accessory, which is also the most important: a trendy sun hat.
Before I start listing all my new favourite sun hats, I feel the need to teach you, girls, a little bit of history about the first sun hat. So, put your phone down, grab a pen and a piece of paper (yes, they still exist) and start taking notes girls.
Well, when was the first head created? Sun hats have been around a very long time. Like us, our ancestors needed something to protect themselves from the sun, rain or cold. Since the Egyptian age, there are many statues and paintings featuring women wearing a sun hat, but it seems to be only in the 1700s that has really become a symbol of fashion.
The straw sun hat that we all love, was actually worn by the lower class only to complete change and become a symbol of the newest provincial class. It is important to know that pale skin vital for the fashionable lady. Not so much for a fake tan business, I guess.
In the 19th century, fashion had a very big change and not only sun hats but hats, in general, had to evolve with it. After the first world war, the ‘crazy’ hairstyles calmed down giving space to a more serious appearance. What is interesting is that they would start to differentiate normal hats from summer hats. A typical sun hat would have a brim that acted as a sun visor.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the love for pale skin gradually was replaced by a whole new attitude towards the sun. Science was also moving fast allowing doctors to study the benefits of the sunlight. Sunbathing was born and the ‘sun-kissed glow’ became an obsession for everyone (that is how fake tan began).
Sadly, because women at that stage desired a more tanned skin, wearing a sun hat was now optional.
It was for a long time that sun hats weren’t featured in fashion shows. However, only recently we really know the risks of tanning when uncovered- unless you go to a saloon. It has been determinate that too much exposure to the sunlight can cause skin cancers as well as wrinkles. Knowing this fashion decided to bring back our favourite sun hats ideas, with different designs and materials.
Maybe not today, but you will be going on holiday this summer, at least I hope because one thing you don’t want to do is staying in London for the summer. We like to stay very positive and tell you that you will need a sun hat. Whether you are in your pool, on the beach or for the broke ones like us simply at the park, a sun hat is a perfect way to sign off your summer look.
If you do not want to take my word for it – I’ll be offended but it is still legit- you can check SS19 catwalks and verify that a sun hat is a MUST HAVE accessory this season.
Remember that sun hats are chic and a great way to protect your skin from the sun rays, so we thought it would have been a nice gesture to list our favourite sun hats.
