8 Easy Ways To Prevent Frizzy Hair In A Humid Climate

Wonderful sunny holidays in exotic tropical climates are fantastic (think of East Asia or the Caribbean!) but what isn’t so fantastic, is the frizz that starts to invade your otherwise silky-smooth strands, when exposed to the humidity of tropical climates. Although having frizzy hair that is caused by humidity, can be disconcerting, fear not – there is hope! Here are 8 easy ways to prevent frizzy hair in a humid climate!

1) Moisturising Shampoo and Conditioner

The first step of any hair care routine is shampooing and conditioning; the anti-frizz routine is no different! Use a rich, moisturising shampoo and corresponding conditioner, as opposed to a deep cleansing set. Usually, moisturising shampoo’s will have a creamier consistency than their gel-like, cleansing counterparts, so look out for this detail, and you’ll already be on your way to beating the frizz!

2) De-frizz Hair Dryer

When you get out of the shower, the first thing you usually do is dry your hair. However, we often just use cheap hairdryers that ‘do the job’ – namely drying – but these hairdryers don’t usually help to control frizz. When you’re in a humid climate, a good quality de-frizz hairdryer is a necessity if you want to achieve smooth, shiny locks! Usually, the technology used in de-frizz hair dryers is ionic technology which helps to minimise frizz.

3) Serum

Serums are extremely important in the game of fighting frizzy hair, as it works to smooth and tame unruly locks, preventing them from becoming frizzy. A super affordable cult favourite in this product category is John Frieda Frizz Ease, which also comes in an extra strength formula – perfect for humid climates! If you prefer salon brands, TGI Bed Head Control Freak Serum is also an excellent one for controlling the frizz in humidity!

4) Leave-In Conditioner

This product is an absolute must if you’re determined to beat the frizz! While ordinarily, a leave-in conditioner isn’t overly important unless you have extremely thick, dry and/or curly hair, every humidity-induced frizzy-haired babe could do with a touch of this to lock in moisture and help keep their strands smooth and sleek.

5) Hair Oil

Hair oil should be a year-round, all-weather, all-climates hair care staple, as it is extremely nourishing and beneficial for your hair. When applied in humidity, hair oils work similarly to hair serum – de-frizzing the hair – making it soft, shiny and manageable. You can use any oil you like, including food grade oils, as long as they are cold pressed and pure. Some popular oils for hair include coconut oil, jojoba oil, and argan oil. Apply a drop or two to the lengths of the hair for the desired effect!

6) Keratin Treatment

If you have hair that is especially susceptible to becoming frizzy and you’d like to go down a semi-permanent route, then it may be worth giving Keratin treatments a go. Traditionally, Keratin treatments semi-permanently straighten the hair, making it appear sleek and shiny. So if you opt for this treatment,  you won’t have to worry as much about being on top of your anti-frizz steps and product usage on a daily basis.

7) Heat Protection Spray

Heat protection spray is important to use in any climate – humid or not – when your hair is being exposed to heat, be it through hair styling tools or the sun. However, heat protecting spray is especially important in humid climates, as, many of them have smoothing and hydrating properties, as well as sealing properties, which help to prevent external moisture from penetrating your hair and causing it to become frizzy.

8) Hair Straightener

Although this isn’t the healthiest option for your hair, it is effective for taming unwanted frizz, particularly when used in conjunction with all the other products we talked about. Use a good quality, ceramic straightener for best results, on the lowest setting that suits your hair, to avoid excessive heat damage.
