6 Easy Ways To Make Your Everyday Diet Healthier

Changing up your everyday diet is an easy way to live a healthier and happier life. However, with intense diets that don’t work and not knowing where to even begin, making these changes can be a little difficult. But it’s easier than you think! Here’s six easy ways to make your everyday diet just that little bit healthier. You can thank me later.

1. Slow down

It takes 20 minutes for your brain to tell you whether you’re full or not. When eating slower, you’ll reduce the number of calories you eat, which will result in less weight gain. Also, waiting too long between meals and not eating enough to begin with, you’ve got a higher chance of over eating. Yes, binging on pizza seems like heaven, but it’s not too good when you realise just how much you’ve actually eaten.

2. Go shopping with a list

You know those times when you grab a packet of chocolate biscuits just before you check out? Or when that packet of pastries just looks too good to resist? Having a list of what you need to buy before going shopping is a perfect way to reduce impulse buying and will also make your everyday diet healthier. Also, don’t go to the grocery store hungry. I don’t think I need to elaborate on that one.

3. Eat your fruit instead of drinking them

Whilst fruits are incredibly healthy for you; containing water, fibre, vitamins and antioxidants, the same does not apply for fruit juices and smoothies. Many fruit juices aren’t even made from real fruit, rather from sugary concentrate. Some fruit juices even contain as much sugar as soft drinks, so think twice before replacing soft drinks with fruit juice instead of water. It’s also possible to consume way too much in one sitting, as you can put way too many servings of fruit into one smoothie, which can have way too much natural sugars just one drink.

4. Cook more at home

Whilst eating out seems tastier and more enjoyable that cooking at home, there’s more benefit to it than you realise. To begin with, cooking dinner at home is a far cheaper option, saving you more money in the long run. Also, when cooking your own food, you’ll have a better understanding of what’s in your meal. You won’t have to worry about any hidden unhealthy ingredients. You don’t know what unhealthy stuff are being put into your favourite take-away foods. You also have more control on your portion sizes and what’s better than having leftovers for tomorrow?

5. Eat from smaller plates

Eating from a large plate will make your portion look smaller, and eating from a smaller plate will make your portion look bigger. Science has proven that eating from a larger plate tricks you into thinking that you haven’t eaten enough. Changing up your dinnerwear will make you feel full quicker and avoid overeating. Who doesn’t love a healthy excuse to buy that new dinner set you’ve had your eye on?

6. Count nutrients, not calories

Dramatically decreasing your calorie intake will not make your everyday diet healthier. You’ll just lose energy and who wants that? It’s not about the amount of calories you eat, it’s about the quality of the calories you eat. Switching out unhealthy options for healthier ones; adding more probiotics, whole grains and whole foods; will make your diet just that little bit healthier. Don’t feel the need to eat less to be healthier, that’s not what being healthy is all about. Just making these small changes to your diet will help you have more energy throughout the day, and you’ll feel better physically and mentally too.
