10 Easy Steps To Becoming More Eco-friendly And Help The Planet

Leading scientists have recently given a chilling estimate that we have 18 months to make serious changes in order to prevent an irreversible state of affairs regarding our climate and environment.

As a result, it is imperative to make known the easy changes we can make in our day to day lives to become more eco-friendly. Here’s our breakdown on the 10 easy steps you can take to becoming more eco-friendly and to potentially help save the planet

1. Cut Down On Plastic

Every day, approximately eight million individual pieces of plastic enter our oceans, whilst a lot of plastic is burned, leading to both polluted waters and polluted air. The first easy step you can take is cutting down on the number of plastic bottles you buy. Re-use a single plastic bottle and refrain from regularly buying bottles of pop.

Shop at new zero-packaging shops – taking your own tubs and containers to buy food kinds of stuff such as pasta – and make sure to recycle whatever plastics you do use.

2. Research Recyclables

Whilst it’s common to recycle the likes of cardboard and plastic, there’s also a lot of other products that are recyclable, some that you might not have known about.

Tear the labels off cans and recycle them, read the labels on other products to check their recyclable status, and research online what products are recyclable which you might not have known about, such as CDs and fluorescent light-bulbs.

3. Use Eco-Friendly Products

Another easy step you can take is using products that are made to be more eco-friendly. This could be anything from biodegradable toilet wipes, reusable coffee cups and recycled or bamboo toothbrushes, all of which aren’t much more expensive than their non-biodegradable counterparts which clog up our landscape.

4. Eat Less Meat

Studies have recently shown that eating less meat is actually the best thing you can do to help the planet because of the resources that meat production demands. So cutting down on your meat consumption is the easiest yet biggest of steps you can take. Make vegetables the centrepiece of your meals, try out protein alternatives like lentils, beans, and quinoa, or commit yourself to go meat-free once or twice a week and become a ‘flexitarian.’

5. Drive Less

Frequently driving reduces air quality through hazardous air pollution which significantly contributes to global warming. So walking, taking the bus or cycling, is an easy step to take to help save the planet.

6. Switch It Off

Switching off electric devices is another easy step you can take. Whether it’s switching off devices on standby or swapping out TV for a book, it will help reduce the amount of energy you use in your household, energy that is derived from toxic fume-releasing power plants.

7. Buy Less, Eat more

Another easy step you can take is by being more economical with your shopping, subsequently buying less and eating more. Recent studies have estimated that 250,000 tons of food wasted in the UK is still edible.

Meaning people are buying more than they should and wasting more than they should. By being more economical with your shopping decisions, you can reduce the amount you buy, and then waste less and eat more of what you do buy.

8. Be More Litter-Conscious

Another dead easy step is simply being more litter-conscious, as 48 percent of people in the UK have admitted to littering according to recent surveys. Of course, this means picking up after yourself but also if necessary after others. Pick up rogue bottles or stray wrappers you happen to come by. Doing a little can mean a lot when litter kills thousands of animals annually and a lot of it insatiably ends up in oceans and natural spaces.

9. Use Energy-Efficient Products

Swapping out normal light-bulbs for LED ones and using rechargeable battery packs are just some examples of small, easy ways you can use energy-efficient products to conserve more energy and help the planet, making it another simple step you can take.

10. Be More Clothes-Conscious

This entails everything from handing old clothes into charity shops or donation points rather than throwing them away, to shopping at second hand and vintage shops yourself. Re-using and exchanging clothes is an easy way to lower the production of new clothes, which puts a strain on the world’s resources. Plus, it keeps perfectly good clothes from being unnecessarily wasted!
