5 DIY Exfoliating Scrubs To Achieve Beautiful Skin On A Budget

A good skincare routine is pretty much void without weekly, or at least fortnightly, exfoliation. Regular exfoliation serves to rid your skin of any dead skin cells and will help make way for the regeneration of healthy, new skin cells. This is why, once you’ve given your face or body a good scrub, you cannot help but notice that silky, smooth feel and glowing look we all crave for our skin. Exfoliating scrubs we buy from beauty stores aren’t bad (well, except for the list of harmful-to-the-skin chemicals you find in them) and I can tell you from experience that these DIY scrubs you can make at home using natural ingredients, are not only less abrasive to your skin, but they also work even better – and they’re a much cheaper alternative! So, let’s get started on these 5 DIY exfoliating scrubs to achieve beautiful skin on a budget.

1) Honey & Sugar Delight

Sounds delicious, doesn’t it? This is one of my personal favourite DIY exfoliating scrubs to achieve beautiful skin on a budget – and it’s super quick and simple to make! Just scoop about a tablespoon of pure, raw honey (if you can get your hands on it!) and add in a teaspoon of cold-pressed, virgin olive oil for moisturising and about 2 teaspoons or so of granulated brown sugar. Mix well, and apply to your face in very gentle, circular motions, and to your neck in slow, upward motions. You can leave this mixture on for about 10 to 15 minutes, and then rinse off with lukewarm water. Gently pat your face dry and moisturise it for extra nourishment and suppleness. Or, you could cleanse your face, and follow with toning and moisturising – only you know your skin well, and what works best for you.

Benefits:

The amazing anti-ageing, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant (basically anti-everything bad) benefits of both honey and olive oil have been highly praised since the beginning of time, so I’d pop my little tub of miracles into a fridge for regular use. Brown sugar contains natural glycolic acid that helps it to effectively penetrate very deeply into the skin – making it a fantastic exfoliant. This mixture works amazingly as a lip scrub, too (and a cheeky lick won’t do you any harm, hehe).

2) Cinnamon & Oatmeal Miracle

All you’ll need for this second gem in DIY exfoliating scrubs to achieve beautiful skin on a budget, is some oatmeal, half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder and some water (I would use filtered water if you have access to it). Mix these miraculous components together so you end up with a soft brown, yummy-looking concoction (if it’s too runny, add more oatmeal) and then apply directly to your face and neck. Don’t leave it on for long as the cinnamon can irritate your skin. Instead, very gently scrub for a good 30 seconds and then wash off with cold water. Pat dry, and follow with your usual toning and moisturising routine.

Cinnamon is known to increase blood flow, so don’t be alarmed if your skin is a little red after you’ve washed it off. The redness will subside after about 10-15 minutes, and if you have very sensitive skin, use only ¼ of a teaspoon.

Benefits:

The skin benefits of cinnamon are miraculous; it’s an amazing anti-microbial and anti-oxidant ingredient, and will increase collagen production in your skin, which means supple, plump, youthful skin for as long as you want! Oatmeal on the other hand is great for moisturising, soothing and healing the skin, and is also rich in anti-oxidant properties.

3) Coconut & Sugar Heaven

This is probably one of the quickest DIY exfoliating scrubs to achieve beautiful skin on a budget. Grab a tablespoon (or a generous teaspoon) of virgin coconut oil and mix in a convenient-enough-amount of sugar. Et voila! You can now smooth it onto your face and neck for about a minute, and then rinse off with warm water. It’s simple, it’s easy and it’s quick – plus it leaves you with divinely smooth, glowing skin.

Benefits:

Coconut oil is an amazing natural moisturiser and includes anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. (Obviously, it smells like a dream, too).

4) Chocolate Sugar & Vanilla Deliciousness

Chocolate doesn’t just taste good, it’s also good for our skin…when you apply it ON the skin, that is (make no mistake about that). The title of this DIY exfoliating face scrub is pretty self-explanatory. Mix in some olive and vanilla extract with a tablespoon of cocoa powder and some brown sugar, and lather generously onto your clean face and neck (taking extra caution not to eat it first or end up baking a cake with it instead). Leave on for about 10 minutes, and rinse off with lukewarm water. It’s clear that sugar and vanilla is one of the most confectionary DIY exfoliating scrubs to achieve beautiful skin on a budget. (Mmmm.)

Benefits:

Cocoa powder is another skincare ingredient that’s packed with antioxidants, which protect your skin from those pesky free radicals we all seek to avoid.

5) Refreshing Blueberry & Honey

Another one of those delicious DIY exfoliating scrubs to achieve beautiful skin on a budget. (I feel like this is turning into an article about desserts, I promise we’re still talking about skincare, hehe). For this refreshing face scrub, you’ll need a handful of fresh blueberries, a tablespoon of honey and some sugar. Throw the components into a food processor, and blend until smooth like a fresh, summer smoothie. (still on skincare, I promise you). Spread the mixture onto your clean face and leave on for about 15 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water and voila. Say hello to that deliciously smooth complexion.

Benefits:

Blueberries are packed with antioxidants, vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E – what more could we ask for?
