15 Day Trips You Can Take Near Limerick

Let’s be honest here, Ireland is a pretty small country, so not many places are further than a three-hour drive. With Limerick being situated on the Midwest coast, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to day trips! With relatively low-cost public transportation, you have no excuse not to explore Munster.

1. Kilkee Cliff Walk

Let’s start off with an oldie but a goldie, Kilkee, Co. Clare. People say that during the summer months, those from Limerick migrate to Kilkee, and this couldn’t be any truer. However, Kilkee is popular for its gorgeous cliff walks and stunning scenery. Take a walk to George’s Head and the Pollock Holes for that fresh sea breeze.

2. Killaloe, County Clare

Killaloe really is a picture-perfect town! With its river views and quaint little cafés, it’s hard to stay away! If its water sports that you’re after, Killaloe is the place for you with water skiing being a popular past time.

3. Lahinch, County Clare

Known for its massive waves, Lahinch is popular with the Irish surfing crowd. As well as your generic surfing, you also have the option of windsurfing and kite surfing. You can hire equipment from the Lahinch surf centre, so all you need is a towel and some sun screen.

4. The Cliffs Of Moher

Only a 20-minute drive from Lahinch, The Cliffs of Moher is a must if you live in Munster! Make sure you visit the cliffs on a relatively clear day or you won’t be able to see the remarkable views that Clare is so famous for!


5. Clare Glens

The Clare Glens in County Tipperary is the perfect day out if you’re on the hunt for a hike or kayaking! With its beautiful aquatic scenes, it’s hard not to visit Clare Glens more than once! Search irishtrails.ie if you’re a hiking enthusiast.

6. Cratloe Woods

If you’re searching to trek around towering trees, why not pay Cratloe woods a visit? Plan a picnic with your friends and watch the sunset on your day off!

7. Salthill, Galway

With a train ticket costing as low as nine euros to Galway, you can be in the city of culture in less than two hours! Spend the day pottering around the shops and embracing the atmosphere, while bar hopping at night! Have a drink or two in the King’s Head.

8. The Burren, County Clare

Dominated by a lime scale landscape, you can brush up on your Junior Cert geography by liaising along the national park. Stop for a bite to eat in Linnane’s pub, New Quay for the catch of the day after an afternoon of hiking!

With a sprawling beach and hilly walks, Spanish Point is the perfect day out if you’re in the mood for some fresh sea air. Only an hour and a half from Limerick city, Spanish Point is a must for any nature enthusiasts!

10. Bunratty Medieval Castle And Folk Park

Bunratty Castle is another one of those places near Limerick city that most have visited on school trips. So, if you’re studying in Limerick, it’s only right that you, too, pay this historic castle and Folk Park a visit!
