Unfortunately, a disappointing number of makeup brands are still not cruelty free. This is often because they sell their products in China, and China’s regulations for makeup brands require brands to submit their products for animal testing in order to be sold there. There are however a lot of brands that don’t sell in China because of this and remain fully cruelty-free. A lot of these brands are also vegan, meaning completely free of animal products altogether. As someone who is passionate about keeping my makeup cruelty-free, I thought I’d share my favourite UK cruelty free makeup brands.
Cruelty free and vegan, Illasmasqua are an animal lover’s dream. Their makeup is also amazing, if on the pricey side. The highlighters are a particular favourite in the beauty community, and are definitely a product to invest in if you’re looking to splurge a little. The pigment and colours of their eyeshadows are also show-stopping, and they have one of the largest collections of bright, unique shades I’ve seen from a makeup brand!
Although not a UK brand, it’s cruelty free and also vegan. Kat Von D is passionate about creating high quality products without harming any animals in the process. Most of Kat Von D’s products have also now become iconic, such as the ‘Everlasting’ liquid lipsticks, the ‘Shade and Light’ eye shadow palette and the Tattoo Liner eyeliner, which are particular fan favourites. Although, a bit more on the pricey side, the products are always good quality and will soon become your staple cruelty free brand.
So Lush isn’t just about about colourful, great smelling bath bombs (though their bath bombs are pretty amazing to be fair); they also have their own makeup line available. Although, a policy called REACH means that Lush is not included on some cruelty free lists, their commitment to not testing on animals, and not buying any of their ingredients from places that test on animals, means they are included on a lot of lists, which is why I decided to include them on this. Also, all of their products are vegetarian, with a lot of their makeup products being vegan as well, including their Eyes Right Mascara.
Urban Decay is widely known for its ‘Naked’ collection palettes, but did you know that they are a cruelty free makeup brand, and that some of their products are vegan too? It’s time to go on an eyeshadow splurge I think! In particular, if I had the money, I’d buy every shade of their Moondust eyeshadow! Or you could try their latest must-try palette ‘Naked Heat’ (when it comes back in stock that is.)
Inika cosmetics are truly the ruler in terms of makeup certifications that make them accessible for everyone. Not only are they organic, but they are cruelty free, vegan, halal, and ethically conscious. Definitely my kind of makeup brand. Like many beauty bloggers, I am fascinated by their Certified Organic Vegan Lipstick that comes in a whole host of red, berry and darker shades that usually are not vegan, as they require a particular type of colouring from animal products.
Too Faced is known for its warm, neutral collections with some of the sweetest colours imaginable. The ‘Sweet Peach‘ eyeshadow palette is a brilliant example and was an instant bestseller. Also, if you’re looking for a product that everyone is raving about, Too Faced is pretty much the home of a lot of beauty favourites from their foundation, to their eyeshadow palettes, blushes and lipsticks. So if you want a non-stop beauty shop that is also a cruelty free brand available in the UK (with a number of products that are vegan), Too Faced is the option for you.
You might know them better for the Christmas gift sets you receive from them – their moisturisers and scrubs are amazing – but they also have a makeup range available as well. I personally recommend their mascaras as a cheaper, alternative cruelty free option, as well as their Sexy Mother Pucker Matte-Lip 3D Lip Colours as they are only £3.50.
Although it sounds more like a middle aged man than a makeup brand; I remember Barry M being a childhood favourite. Especially for School Disco’s where you literally just wanted to be covered in glitter. Luckily, with festival season under way, that look is definitely back in style and Barry M is definitely an affordable, cruelty free option on this list with some products even being vegan (to find the vegan products take a look at their website and just type ‘vegan’ into the search box.) I recommend stocking up next time you visit Boots and watch all those points add up on your Points Card.
This is another brand with so many iconic, amazing products that it is hard to know where to start. If you’re looking for somewhere to start, I’d recommend either the Modern Renaissance eye shadow palette or one of their Glow Kits, and the best part is they are a cruelty-free brand.
My love for Makeup Revolution has been well documented but I couldn’t resist talking about the brand again. Especially, as a lot of the brands on this list are definitely on the more expensive side, so I wanted to include a more budget-friendly option. Makeup Revolution is definitely one of the best UK Cruelty Free Makeup Brands in terms of price with a lot of products under the £10 mark.
