As of late, Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Stay In Place Foundation has become something of a cult product for us Brits, with over four thousand bottles sold every day in the UK. However, with the popularity of cruelty-free, luxury beauty only growing – and growing fast – when it comes to finding a cruelty-free, vegan dupe for your favourite foundation, you’re spoilt for choice.
For the sake of transparency, Estée Lauder stipulates that they are committed to the elimination of animal testing unless “a regulatory body demands it for its safety or regulatory assessment.” Since Estée Lauder sells their products in China (where “animal testing on cosmetics or cosmetic ingredients is required by law”) they can’t be classed as a cruelty-free company.
Luckily, there’s an ever-increasing number of cruelty-free make up products taking over the luxury beauty market. Though that means knowing where to look for high quality, cruelty-free make up brands can be somewhat daunting – especially if, like me, you’re no beauty buff. So, to make it easier, we’ve compiled a collection of five of the best cruelty-free and vegan alternatives to the sell-out foundation for your consideration!
Too Faced is not only a premium beauty brand but a holy grail for the conscientious cosmetic connoisseur. Their ‘Born This Way’ liquid foundation offers medium to full coverage, is oil-free (great news for oily skinned babes like me!!) and comes in 35 highly varied shades – we stan inclusivity.
Whilst it must be stressed that Too Faced is not a wholly vegan brand (click here for their vegan list) they are a certified 100 percent cruelty-free brand. So, you can shop with confidence when it comes to guaranteeing no animals were tested upon in the making of that flawless face.
This Smashbox foundation proves that you don’t need to compromise on your high-end makeup brands when you want to make ethical choices.
Whilst the bottle says 15-hour wear, for those of us that like to go from work straight to the club on a Friday, that 15-hour guarantee is a mere minimum – so you’ll be able to rely on this to last you way into the early hours! It comes in 40 different shades which don’t change colour as they oxidise, making it an ideal choice when you’re in and out of air-conditioned buildings.
If Too Faced is the cruelty-free holy grail, then Primark’s own-brand beauty range deserves it’s praises too.
For a mere fraction of Estée Lauder’s £34 price point, Primark has released a pretty good dupe of the Double Wear foundation for just £5 (!!!). This bargainous beauty belter applies almost identically to its more expensive and non-cruelty-free competitor, although it isn’t as long-wearing. Whilst it’s one that might be best for those of us who prefer to let our skin breathe, for just £5 it will make a worthy addition to any novice’s makeup bag.
If Youtube gave us anything, it’s fledgling beauty vloggers sporting affordable cruelty-free makeup brands conducting all the product testing for us.
NYX is one of those brands that has really benefitted from exposure on social media, and it deserves all the recognition it can get. Their Can’t Stop Won’t Stop 24 Hour Foundation is formulated to suit all skin types, making it ideal for those of us who find our skin type changes as often as the weather. It’s currently half price at Feel Unique, so we recommend stocking up on this one before it goes viral.
And at the other end of the spectrum that is the cruelty-free rainbow is this high-intensity, super-reliable foundation by MUA-fave, Cover FX. Only the best will do for the former chief chemist at M.A.C., so you know you’re in for a winner with this alternative.
Before you recoil in horror at the steep price tag, be reassured that a little goes a hell of a long way with this one, so the 35ml bottle will last even the most enthusiastic makeup lovers ages. And for the true cosmetic devotee – this foundation is available according to undertone as shade!
