10 Creative Popcorn Toppings To Try On Movie Night
There’s nothing quite like a huge bowl of home-made popcorn, especially when you manage not to burn it (we’ve all been there), and whether you like yours salty or sweet, there are loads of topping combinations out there to try. Popcorn is naturally low in calories and high in fibre, making it the ideal everyday snack (of course, depending on your choice of toppings). Here are 10 creative popcorn toppings to try on movie night, some which are healthier than others, but who cares about calories when you’re watching a film, right?
1. Salted Caramel Popcorn
This one is for lovers of both sweet and salty, a truly mouth-watering combination when you throw in the addition of caramel. All you need is a batch of traditional homemade salted popcorn, to which you then add a caramel mixture made from 4 simple ingredients – butter, brown sugar, corn syrup and salt. Pour the mixture over the popcorn in a baking tray and bake for 30 minutes, then, voila, you have yourself Salted Caramel Popcorn!
2. Cheesy Vegan Popcorn
Regardless of whether you’re vegan or not, this Cheesy Vegan Popcorn is a must-do to add a cheese-like nutty flavour to your movie snack! All you need to add to your salted popcorn is a few table spoons of nutritional yeast – the quantity is really up to yourself, I tend to just sprinkle away. If you like a bit of spice you can also add some chili flakes into the mixture for an extra kick! This is one of the really cool creative popcorn toppings! And it’s vegan!
3. Coconut and Peanut Butter Popcorn
I’m a firm believer that peanut butter goes with almost anything, and popcorn does not escape that list. The best part of this topping is that you only actually need one ingredient – coconut peanut butter! There are a few brands out there, but Meridian and Pip & Nut are both particularly delicious.
4. Cinnamon Sugar Popcorn
Cinnamon Sugar Popcorn should be sold as a regular popcorn flavour in cinemas, it’s that good. It’s like eating a portion of tiny little freshly baked churros. Add a mixture of melted butter, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla to your regular batch of popcorn. This topping is probably exclusively for lovers of all things sweet.
5. Dark Chocolate and Smoked Paprika Popcorn
Dark Chocolate with a touch of spice is a full-proof combination in any context, and popcorn is no exception. You can opt for sweet or salty with this topping, then simply add melted dark chocolate and stir through a generous sprinkling of smoked paprika!
6. Lemon and Black Pepper Popcorn
For a more sophisticated and lighter flavour, why not add a squeeze of lemon and freshly grounded black pepper to your popcorn! We’d stick to salted popcorn for this one too, unless you want to get really creative and try it with sweet. Don’t knock it til you try it! These are some of the best creative popcorn toppings!
7. Milk Chocolate and Marshmallow Popcorn
If you’ve got a sweet tooth, this is the popcorn topping for you! Dairy Milk chocolate works particularly well with this one, but feel free to change it up with any brand of milk, white or dark chocolate! For vegetarians you can switch the marshmallows for gelatin-free ones too.
8. Hundreds and Thousands Party Popcorn
One of the particularly creative popcorn toppings, this is a simple two ingredient recipe which looks just as sweet as it tastes! Mix sweet home-made popcorn with melted white chocolate and sprinkle with hundreds and thousands for a colourful party-perfect finish.
9. Mexican Lime Popcorn
Sriracha is the star of the show in this popcorn topping, and who can really be surprised? It makes every food better. Add some picante to your regular salted popcorn with a squeeze of fresh lime and a load of Sriracha hot sauce. This will undoubtedly go down well with a Desperados beer if you like a drink on your movie night!
10. Sea Salt and Balsamic Vinegar Popcorn
Think Kettle Chips, but lighter and possibly even more addictive. This Sea Salt and Balsamic Vinegar Popcorn will go down a treat with crisp-lovers, and is really simple to make too! The recipe is pretty much given away in the title, with an addition of butter and seasoning (dill works well).
