8 Coffee Shops In Coventry That Are Better Than Starbucks

What is it about independent coffee shops that makes them so much better than chains? Every sees Central Perk or Luke’s Diner and wishes they had their own unique and quirky coffee shop, where they become a regular, get a free coffee and their own seat. In Coventry, it’s mainly about Costa, Starbucks and Cafe Nero but if you want to be you’re own quirky regular, here are 8 Unique Coffee Shops in Coventry that are better than any chain.

1. Finney’s, Warwick Row

Finney’s looks like it should be on a street in New York somewhere. It’s got a lovely wooden exterior which is well lit when things begin to get dark outside and the interior is also gorgeously wooden with comfy stools, window seat and modern lighting that make the place look like the best coffee shop ever. The staff are ever so friendly, and Finney’s might make the best coffee…ever! Not to mention their wide selection of sweet treats to take your fancy. So if you want to divert from Starbucks one day, go ahead and head to Finney’s.

2. Backhaus&Co, FarGo Village

FarGo Village is a unique little shopping village at the top of Far Gosford Street. It also has one of the loveliest coffee shops that is definitely worth the walk up there. Behind the fantastic Dashing Blades Barber Shop you’ll find Backhaus&Co, a wonderfully tucked away little coffee shop serving everything from a range of great coffees, to homemade baked goods. Yum! It’s quiet and a great place to sit and get some work down without being pestered, or to just sit and chill for twenty minutes. With it’s charming staff and chilled atmosphere, you’ll rather get coffee here than anywhere else.

3. Kahawa Cafe, New Union Street

This fantastic corner cafe is a great place to hide from the city, while still remaining within it. The Kahawa Cafe sits on the corner of New Union Street just slightly out of the centre enough that there’s still a bustle, but not so much that it’s noticeable. They offer a lovely gluten free menu and their hot drink selection is worth checking out. It’ll be easy to become a regular here, so if you’re think of stuffing Costa, why not try this Coventry cafe?

4. Rising Cafe, Priory Street

This cafe is in the perfect location with the perfect intentions. Along with it’s flipping scrumptious cakes and coffee, the cafe also hires people recovering from alcohol and drug addictions so it’s constantly giving back. It’s also had notables visits from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and as well as having a wonderfully quirky interior, it’s also just a lovely place to sit and have a nice cup of tea (or coffee). Trust me, after one visit you’ll want to be a regular at this Coventry Cafe. This is one of the coffee shops in Coventry that we love!

5. Cafe W, Smithford Way

If you know where Smithford Way is then you might find yourself wondering where this cafe is hiding. Situated on the second floor of Waterstones, Cafe W offers a great view of the lower precinct and city centre, so it’s the number one place to do some people watching. Not only that, it offers a nice selection of food from cakes to sandwiches and many different types of teas and coffees (I suggest their Berry tea). The staff are a lovely bunch and you’re welcome to take a book from Waterstones to peruse before buying it, just another great benefit of a unique Coventry cafe.

6. The Undercroft Cafe, Bayley Lane

This one is another well hidden gem. The Undercroft can be find in the undercroft (surprise, surprise) of St Mary’s Guildhall which isn’t far from the Cathedral. It prides itself on being a fantastic bakery and it really isn’t anything short of fantastic. The interior is incredible thanks to the surrounding St Mary’s Guildhall but that really doesn’t take anything away from it’s lovely hot drinks and gorgeous food. It’s quiet, it’s welcoming and a great switch from a Starbucks.

7. Castle Yard, Bayley Lane

If you walk down Bayley Lane, you could be forgiven for missing this coffee shop, what with the amount going on around you. But if you do miss it, then you ruined a lovely cafe for yourself. Sitting in a beautiful courtyard, is the Castle Yard Tea Rooms. It’s a breathtaking cafe just across from the amazing Coventry Cathedral with one of the best cake selections you might ever sea. People have raved about it’s yummy fresh lemonade, but it’s hot drinks are one for talking about also. It’s Instagram worthy and much better than the usual coffee chains, so make this a regular coffee spot. This is one of the best coffee shops in coventry!

8. 2 Tone Cafe, Walsgrave Road

This cafe is so cool it should be on a bucket list. The 2 Tone Cafe (& Simmer Down Restaurant) pays homage to the 2 Tone genre which Coventry created. Famous for it’s Tea Tone and Skappucino, it already sounds like a super cool place to get a hot drink. Not to mention the selection of food they have – the Caribbean Breakfast looks an amazing meal to try. The cleverly decorated interior really keeps to the 2 Tone feel and with the wonderful staff running it, it’s a much quirkier Coventry cafe to grab a coffee.
