Life is never going to be easy. It’s an old fable that once one part of your life everything starts going well, other parts will fall apart. Now whilst this isn’t strictly true, it is true that if you start doing well in something you will put more time and effort into it and therefore less time and effort into other endeavours. Finding a career that you’re passionate about and finding the correct options and steps to get there is difficult enough without having to worry about your relationship. So many people don’t know what they want to do with their lives, so having a clear plan is incredible and should be respected. If you and your partner are truly close, they should understand if you sometimes need to choose your career over your relationship and here’s why:
In the current British economic climate jobs aren’t as fruitful as they used to be and certainly require more qualifications than ever before. So even being able to find a job that you love and are proud to have can be very difficult and should be respected. With this in mind, it doesn’t have to be a choice of career or relationship, you can have both.
In today’s world of Facebook, Instagram, Skype and all other forms of social media there is no reason why a relationship can’t continue just because you have a career. Even if the thought of a long-distance relationship is hard, it doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. The keep the relationship fresh you can always be inventive on Skype or share photos on Facebook – even if they’re just silly mundane things, continuing to talk normally is crucial to keep the relationship normal. This is something important to consider when thinking of choosing your career over your relationship.
Perhaps you have to consider where the relationship is at. If you’ve just met and things are going well, but this job is perfect and 100 miles away. Maybe then it’s okay to end the relationship, hopefully on good terms. You never know, you could always pick up the relationship at a later date when you’re both in happy and secure places. This is something to consider when choosing your career over your relationship.
If the relationship is a bit rocky but isn’t new, this job could be a great excuse to find freedom and think about what you really need out of life. If your partner isn’t happy for you and is telling you not to take the job, then they might not be the person for you. You should be with someone who is only happy for you when you succeed. They might be sad about a changing situation, but love means them believing in you and wanting you to be the best you can be. If those aren’t the emotions you’re receiving, then it could be time for a talk about what the relationship is and how you are feeling.
Another thing to think about is your age, if you’re reading this then you’re likely a student or about to graduate. You’re probably in your early 20s and have a hell of a lot more years ahead of you! If you’re being offered the job now, you should take it. A job offer might not come back, but a person who loves you should be there. Even if you lose them for a few years, there is always a chance for a re-coupling. There is no reason you should be ever be ashamed of taking a job, a job sets you up and gives you independence and a chance to be yourself – take it!
