7 Cake Flavours That You Need To Try

There are so many cake flavours available that you may be missing out on some amazing cakes. If you’ve had enough of chocolate or vanilla, here are seven delicious and less common cake flavours that you need to try.

1. Red Velvet

If you don’t know what red velvet cake is, it’s basically a rich chocolate-flavoured sponge cake with a distinctive red colour. It has layers of buttercream or cream cheese icing between the stacks. The nice thing is about red velvet cake is that the cocoa isn’t as rich, making it perfect for people who enjoy chocolate but aren’t looking for something as thick or rich as a traditional chocolate cake.

2. Mango

There are so many fruity cake flavours out there, but one flavour that you may have not considered is mango. A mango cake consisting of fruit, vanilla sponge layers, and cream is a match made in heaven. Mango is a perfect addition to a rich, creamy and spongey cake because it’s refreshing and not overly sweet. It creates a nice balance and the flavour isn’t too overpowering or sickly. It’s guaranteed that you’ll want to reach for another slice.

3. Coconut

Coconut cakes are delicious, but rather than a traditional sponge cake, I highly recommend trying a coconut-flavoured mille crepe cake. This type of cake is a traditional French pastry that consists of alternating layers of crepe and cream – usually between 10 and 20. The best thing about this cake is the balance between the cream and the crepe layers. The cream is coconut flavoured and also includes coconut chunks to add some texture and subtle flavour.

4. Ube

Ube is a type of bright purple yam that’s used as flavouring and colouring in sweet dishes. It’s a popular ingredient that’s typically used in Asian desserts. The flavour is an interesting blend of vanilla with a hint of nuttiness like pistachio. The flavour isn’t too intense it’s quite subtle and gentle like vanilla. Ube cakes are a must try, especially if they have layers of ube-flavoured cream.

5. Tiramisu

Not everyone is a fan of coffee, but if you’re drawn to its flavour then you definitely need to have a slice of tiramisu. Tiramisu is an Italian dessert consisting of layers of sponge cake soaked in coffee. It’s layered with a creamy whipped mixture of eggs, sugar and mascarpone cheese. The top is then dusted with cocoa to add another layer of flavour. This cake flavour definitely has a coffee taste to it, but the added layers and ingredients transform it into a sweet dessert that lacks any bitterness from the coffee. It’s a great example of ingredients balancing the flavour out, and its a must-have dish for any coffee fans.

6. Matcha

Matcha is powdered green tea leaves used as a flavouring in many East Asian and Southeast Asian desserts. If you’ve never had matcha you may not be a fan of the flavour from the get-go and learning to love it can be an acquired taste. For first-time triers, matcha can seem a little bitter thanks to the green tea flavour, but once you get used to the subtle taste you can appreciate the gentle hint of sweetness. Matcha sponge cake has a very subtle taste so if you’re trying a cake, get one that has matcha cream to taste more of the flavour.

7. Strawberry Cream

Strawberry cream cakes definitely have to be my favourite cake flavour ever. It’s a simple combination of vanilla sponge with layers of whipped cream and fresh strawberries. Although these cakes can be very creamy and feel a little rich, the added strawberries balance it out by adding texture, sweetness and some freshness.
