5 Budgeting Tips For Students Who Don’t Live With Their Parents

So you’ve moved out and have taken your first steps to living outside of your parents home. You’re off to university and have to support yourself. There are some key things to know when at university because you can’t splash out as much as you used to otherwise you won’t be able to eat. So priorities are important to remember. Here are 5 budgeting tips for you students who move out and don’t live with your parents.

Priorities

Prioritise what you need over what you want because you can’t eat the latest Yeezys. You don’t want to find that you’ve spent your last £150 when you still have groceries to buy and travel tickets to purchase.

Money Box

Keep a money box, all the change that gathers up in your purse you can put into a money jar. Over time when you forget that you’ve actually been putting money into a jar, you will have a nice little surprise of some extra cash which may come in handy on a rainy day.

Savings

Being at university is a great time to start saving, so why not open a savings account and put a little bit of money away monthly to save for a nice little holiday during the summer break, so  you can come back refreshed.

Cheaper Alternatives

When it comes to grocery shopping try and shop local it will be cheaper, also when going to do supermarket shopping trips choose the cheaper alternatives. They are just as good as the more expensive ingredients they’re just cheaper. If you buy loose items such as onions they can sometimes be cheaper than bundles. Furthermore don’t buy too much because you don’t want to have money going to waste, just because something is cheap doesn’t mean you need it. So weigh up your options before making unnecessary purchases that will end up with money going down the drain.

Going Out

We all want to go out and have a good time but going out costs money, especially if you are your typical student who enjoys having a drink whilst you’re out. A lot of students save money by pre-drinking so they don’t have to waste money at the bar of a club. Drink responsibly and safely but save money on bars. Alternatively if you’re more introverted, stay home and put on Netflix.
