Now that summer has final hit us, you should make sure you have the perfect sun hats for travel. Wearing a hat in the summer is a great way to protect your hair, eyes, and skin from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. While you still need to slather your skin with sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, a hat can help give added coverage for the skin on your ears and neck. For maximum protection make sure you wear one with a large brim to shade your face and eyes properly.
Hats have long been a hub of functionality and fashion as long as I can remember. They’ve been created out of almost every possible material, in every conceivable size, shape, and colour so there is definitely one for everybody. Hats have been adorned, adored, and worn for centuries, covering the heads of warriors and housewives, construction workers and models, and men and women from every walk of life on every part of the planet.
To help you choose your perfect hat here are the best sun hats for travel.
The fedora hat is classic and refined, you can’t fault it. A fedora is a hat with a soft brim and indented crown. It is typically creased lengthwise down the crown and “pinched” near the front on both sides. It is one of the best sun hats for travel because it isn’t too big so isn’t a nuisance in luggage or to carry around. You can buy them in most high street stores such as H&M and New Look, such as these:
A Panama hat is a traditional brimmed straw hat of Ecuadorian origin. Traditionally, these hats were made from the plaited leaves of the Carludovica palmata plant. It is one of the best hats for travel because it goes with every outfit and they are comfy. Women’s versions are often straw with a black band or coloured rim; Accessorize has a lovely selection.
A floppy sun hat is so perfect for travelling as it can be squished into a suitcase and will retain its original shape once unpacked. Floppy hats are often one colour or striped. The current trend is floppy hats that have writing on the brim or patterned designs. I love these two:
As a woman you cannot beat a wide brimmed hat. They are so elegant and classy and accompany any outfit. Wide brim hats were particularly stylish during the 1970’s. They are predominantly useful for travelling European countries such as Italy, as they are stylish and still protect you from the sun. Here is my favourite:
These hats are the least fashionable, however they are durable and packable. They are a simple soft cloth hat with a brim which is particularly useful in hot countries where you are trekking or hiking. Topshop have reversible ones to change up your look:
The baseball cap isn’t the best for sun protection as it doesn’t shade your neck and ears, however it does provide shade for your eyes. Make sure that you still wear sun cream with these hats as a baseball cap is a type of soft cap with a rounded crown and a stiff peak projecting in front. If you are going to wear a baseball cap on your travels then this is the best one to go for:
