The 10 Best Road Trips In England To Take Advantage Of This Summer

Stuck on where to go on holiday at the moment? Here are what we consider to be the places you should go for the best road trips in England! Did you know that there’s loads of places to visit in the UK? From beautiful beaches to the lush green English countryside, we have it all right here! So tell your best friends, pack your bags and jump in your car because you will be taking advantage of these road trips in England this summer!

Al Past Gateshead, Tyne & Wear

20 metres up close to the A1 in Gateshead is the Angel of the North. This contemporary sculpture was designed by Antony Gormley and has a wingspan of 54 metres. You can’t miss it!

Humber Bridge, North Yorkshire

The Humber Bridge, near Kingston upon Hull, is a 2,220-metre suspension bridge, which opened to traffic in 1981. Explore stunning views as you drive across this incredible piece of English infrastructure.

The Cotswolds

The Cotswolds have been declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and it’s not secret why. It is home to gorgeous rolling hills and idyllic country cottages. It covers nearly 800 square miles across five different counties (Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire).

Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is just a short ferry-ride away which makes it a great road trip option without much driving required. The Isle of Wight will make it seem as if you’re going abroad when you’re actually still in the UK! It has beautiful beaches with sand cliffs, turquoise-coloured sea and lots of wildlife to see!

Peak District National Park

There is so much to see on the road to the Peak District. Beyond the country houses and popular heritage sites, there is an extensive trail of public footpaths, cycle trails, rock climbing and caving for when you’ve had enough of driving and want to get out and explore! From Chatsworth House, a 1600s mansion, to Mam Tor, a popular hiking destination, the Peak District is definitely an incredible place to drive to in the north of England.

Stonehenge

As one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, Stonehenge is definitely somewhere to include on your road trip in England this summer. It’s a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, just outside of Amesbury. Consisting of giant standing stones, weighing around 25 tons, archaeologists estimate that is was built sometime in 3000 BC to 2000 BC. If you’re into historical mysteries, this is a road trip destination for you!

Devon

Devon is a county in the southwest of England. It is home to gorgeous sandy beaches, fossil cliffs, medieval towns and moorland national parks. Commonly known as the English Riviera, it is a series of picturesque harbour towns including Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. As part of your trip through Devon, you will drive down the South West Coast Path, which follows the coastline, taking in the cliffs of the northern Exmoor Coast and rock formations on the southern Jurassic Coast. Such a beautiful place and definitely somewhere you’ll want to go when planning the best road trips in England!

Cornwall

Beyond Devon, right on the southwestern tip of the UK, is Cornwall. It forms a peninsula encompassing moorland and hundreds of sandy beaches, culminating at the promontory Land’s End. The south coast of Cornwall is home to picturesque harbour villages like Fowey and Falmouth. The north coast, however, has lots of towering cliffs and seaside resorts like Newquay, famously known for its surfing.

Brighton

Much closer to London, but another popular English seaside town, is Brighton. It’s the perfect day drive destination with a beach, and home to the famous Brighton Pier with rides and food stands. If you plan to stay for longer, there is a buzzing nightlife, art scene and lots of shopping and festivals! A great spot to hit when planning the best road trips in England!

Lake District National Park

Another World Heritage UNESCO site, people from all over visit the Lake District National Park for its spectacular scenery, wildlife, history and culture. Another great option if you want to drive and get out of a city because there are so many walks to do and lakes to jump in and swim in!
