Having kinky or curly hair can be both a blessing and a curse, and growing up it can be difficult to maintain, and keep moisturized and shiny. But you don’t always need to hide your hair behind hats or wigs. There are some great products out there that can change your view and make you love your hair instead of hate it. Its about time we embraced our curls, and truly cared for them. I mean my hair has a life of its own, so may as well treat it like its own entity and care for it properly.
Here are my 10 best products for curly and kinky hair that are sure to make you fall in love with your hair.
Shea butter is great because its 100% natural. You can use it on your skin as well, and use it on your hair whether it’s wet or dry. Its semi hard to find, but once you do it will last for ages, and you can rest easy knowing you’ve got no weird chemicals in your hair.
Naptural85 describes itself as simple, natural hair care. It is designed specifically for people with tight kinky hair without using any harsh ingredients. It encourages healthy natural lifestyle and tips and tricks for black women’s health and hair.
Coconut oil is one of my personal favourites for hair. You can melt it and use it as a base oil, and add different products for this, for scent or effect – i like to add lavender for softening. Its best used while your hair is wet massage it in and towel dry!
Argon oil, can be pricey, but its great for adding to an oil for some extra care. Or you can let it sink in before a deep condition in order to get a soft and silky base texture. I wouldn’t use this everyday, but its nice to use a few squeezes every couple of months or so.
Mixed Chicks is a brand created specifically for mixed race hair. However as you may know, mixed race hair varies widely, therefor this product has been super hit and miss. For me its a miss, the product hangs off my hair, and doesn’t seep in enough. However i have heard from a variety of people, that if you have tighter curls, this gives you a defining boost, and is good for things like braids or plaits. So this product could be your bestie.
Creme of nature shampoo and conditioner is great for kinky hair. It moisturizes, de-tangles and deep cleans and conditions. Personally I am not incredibly choosey when it comes to shampoo’s and conditioners, I just choose products that don’t have too many products and that are silicone and ammonia free!! But if your hair is sensitive to its wash creme of nature is a great shout.
Rosemary oil, can be found in places such as Holland and Barrett, and it is absolutely perfect for that extra sparkle, extra glow and shine. You can add a few drops to a base oil, or just rub some in your palms and streak through your hair. It also smells yummy!
Almond oil and cedar wood oil are both fabulous at moisturizing and softening hair. This is great to add when hair is wet,and doesn’t need an intense moisturize, but needs a nice soften and moisture boost. I would recommend doing around 3/4 almond oil and 1/4 cedarwood. This is a perfect nutty blend.
Shea Moisture has been around for a while, and has received some backlash due to the change of recipes, which made the products more accessible to a more wide range or people. Despite this though, Shea Moisture had a wide range of products for many different hair types, from oils to creams, to shampoos, to gels. It is usually widely accessible and you should be able to find it at your local pharmacy, and its not ridiculously prices either.
Cantu is a brand who’s products are incredibly inclusive for all hair textures, they have a variety of products for different hair types and textures and is easily accessible in places like boots. This is an amazing product and isn’t over priced either. I recommend the leave in conditioner for an intense moisturize.
