With so much to watch, I have narrowed down the best British TV shows on Netflix right now:

1. Sherlock (2010-2017) 4 Seasons, 15 Episodes

BBC’s Sherlock, is a contemporary crime drama television series set in present day London, based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes detective stories. The show was created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the arrogant, but brilliant genius Sherlock Holmes. His sidekick Dr Watson is played by Martin Freeman and their relationship adds a key element of humour to this critically acclaimed drama series. With intriguing plots and clever writing, each 90-minute episode goes quickly and keeps its viewers guessing. There are nods to the original stories, as well as modern twists such as the technology Holmes uses to help with his deductions. The third series of Sherlock became the UK’s most watched drama series on British television since 2001, making this show one of the best British TV shows on Netflix right now!

2. Planet Earth II (2016) 1 Season, 6 Episodes

The only non-fiction programme on this list, Planet Earth II can only be described as the most ambitious nature documentary ever made. This series is a sequel to the original Emmy-winning Planet Earth from 2006. Presented and narrated by the legendary Sir David Attenborough, Planet Earth II offers a fascinating insight into how animals meet the challenges of surviving in some of the most iconic habitats on Earth. The series, shot over three years in 40 different countries, gives its viewers a compelling view of the world all the way from the frozen north to the dry forests of the equator. Thanks to improvements in technology since 2006, Planet Earth II captures elusive animal behaviours in previously inaccessible locations and as the first BBC TV series to be produced in 4K, this captivating programme is a great example of revolutionary film-making. It’s first episode drew a huge audience of well over 12 million, making it the UK’s most successful nature documentary ever!  This is definitely one of the best British TV shows currently on Netflix you can’t miss!

3. Peaky Blinders (2013-2017) 4 Seasons, 30 Episodes

Peaky Blinders is an English crime drama set in 1920s Birmingham, in the aftermath of the First World War. The name comes from a nineteenth-century urban youth gang active in the city in the 1890s and the series correspondingly follows the criminal exploits of the Shelby family. Cillian Murphy plays the gang’s leader Tommy Shelby in this British mob drama, as the family are pursued by Chester Campbell (Sam Neill), a detective from Belfast whose task is to put an end to the gang’s criminal antics. The series will leave you questioning whose side you’re own, as you feel like you’re siding with the Shelby’s rather than the law. With its gritty indie-rock soundtrack, Peaky Blinders really finds its feet by the second series and quite rightly won a BAFTA for Best British Drama Series this year. It is no wonder that it is now not only a British favourite, but one of the most popular British TV shows on Netflix!

4. Call the Midwife (2012-2017) 6 Seasons, 54 Episodes

Call the Midwife is a period drama about a group of midwives working in Poplar, in the East End of London in the late 1950s and early 1960s. This popular historical series is based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth who worked as a midwife during this time and is one of the few primetime evening dramas on British television to have all-female leads. Arguably a feminist show, Call the Midwife offers a moving look at the different roles women played during the era and the joys and struggles of parenthood and married life. Albeit somewhat nostalgic, the show is known for tackling difficult, topical subjects in its episodes, including: poverty, miscarriage, abortion, disease epidemics, adoption, prostitution, racism, religion and even homosexuality. The show also follows the close friendships and various romances of the midwives and is well-known for tugging at the heart strings when you least expect it, so prepare yourself for an emotional rollercoaster during this series! This has to be one of the best British TV shows on Netflix right now!

5. Luther (2010-2015) 4 Seasons, 21 Episodes

This gritty, psychological crime drama stars the talented Idris Elba as DCI John Luther, a self-destructive London detective whose passion and anger proves problematic as he tries to solve difficult murder cases. The series creator took inspiration from Sherlock Holmes and Columbo for the titular character Luther, who becomes absorbed by the dark side of humanity and must face his own personal demons throughout the show, as he gains an insight into the mind of a killer. Luther is action-packed, excellently written and showcases Elba at his absolute best. In fact, his performance in the show earned him several accolades, including a Golden Globe. With longer cases to get your teeth into in series two, Luther is definitely one of the most binge-worthy British TV shows on Netflix right now
