The combination of the word beer with cocktail probably seems a daring possibility to many, but the result of beer cocktails has proven to be surprisingly delightful. We’re all familiar with the classic shandy (50/50 beer with lemonade), but why stop at lemonade when the combo can be taken so much further!
You don’t need to possess any kind of mixology skills, as you can easily spice your drinking game up with a variety of flavoured beers, ciders and spirits. Here are some of the best beer cocktails you need this summer, regardless of the British weather, which even beer-haters are guaranteed to love.
So the shandy has been going around for years and is often viewed as the drinkable option for those who don’t like beer. However, the usual standard 7-up or Sprite which is opted for can be substituted with cloudy plain or raspberry lemonade for a more interesting twist. Add a wedge of grapefruit and some fresh raspberries, and you’ve got yourself one of the most delicious beer cocktails!
This is a really simple example for beer cocktails that require very few ingredients. Salt the glass by moistening the rim with a lemon or lime wedge, then place the rim on a plate of salt. After this, stick in a few ice cubes, add some fresh lime juice and a shot of tequila, then fill up with the beer of your choice (a Mexican beer like Sol or Corona would be fitting)! If you have more of a sweet tooth you can always use sugar as an alternative to salt, or if you like a bit of spice, opt for chili salt. Garnish appropriately with a lime wedge or jalapenos.
Similar to a Bloody Mary, this is a tomato juice-based beer cocktail originating from the Mexican drink Clamato. The key to this one is in the spices, so you’re going to need a few dashes of Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce and fresh pepper. Salt the rim of the glass to be begin with, or with chili salt if you really want to keep with the Mexican theme. Mix the sauces and pepper with the juice of one lime then finish the glass with a 50/50 tomato juice to beer ratio. Similarly to the Michelada, go for a Mexican beer and garnish with a wedge of lime and some fresh olives. A delicious option for beer cocktails!
This classic Cuban cocktail is a favourite for many of us, but I bet you never thought of substituting the soda water for citrus beer? The sweet citrus flavours of the beer perfectly compliment the classic Mojito ingredients of fresh lime juice, mint and a shot of spiced rum. It’s a game changer, you won’t regret it! Serve this one heavy on the ice for the perfect summer cool-down beverage.
This is the perfect party beer cocktail to prepare for a large group of people – beer punch! All you need is a pitcher, a bottle of sprite, a carton of pineapple juice, some bottles or cans of your preferred beer, and some sliced lemons, oranges and limes. The ratio of these ingredients really depends on your preference, but I’d say ¼ sprite, ¼ pineapple juice and ½ beer is a safe guideline.
This beer cocktail could be tempting enough even for die hard Guinness fans, and has two variations depending on the level of sophistication you’re going for. The essential ingredient is Guinness of course, which is mixed with either cider or champagne – the latter obviously being the classier option, but the cider does give the mixture a sweeter cocktail finish. Half fill a tall glass with whichever of the two, then finally top off with that Irish goodness!
