In the world of makeup and beauty, a good tool is your best friend. Before, there were brushes, but now, more people prefer sponges for easier and more natural looking makeup application. While there are tons of beauty sponges on the market, there seem to be two favourites: the Original Beauty Blender and Real Techniques’ Miracle Complexion Sponge which tons of people swear is a dupe for the original product. So, beauty blender vs. real techniques, which is the better product? We’re here to set things straight once and for all and tell you which of these sponges is actually better.
When looking at the two sponges side by side, it’s clear that the Real Techniques sponge is bigger than the Beauty Blender. While some people think this means you get more product for less money, it does have its cons. While the Real Techniques sponge is great at blending out on large areas, its larger shape makes it hard to manoeuvre around smaller areas such as under the eyes or around the nose. Meanwhile, the Beauty Blender’s smaller size makes it easy to use the smaller tip to get into hard-to-reach areas. This is one of the reasons why the beauty blender is considered better in the beauty blender vs. real techniques challenge!
Verdict: Beauty Blender
While both sponges do a similar job at blending, they have slightly different shapes. The Beauty Blender has a rounded bottom, while the Real Techniques sponge has a flat edge. This means that the Real Techniques sponge can be used for contouring and highlighting, which you can’t really do that easily with the Beauty Blender.
Verdict: Real Techniques
When it comes to blending out foundations and makeup products, both sponges actually do a pretty good job at this. The Real Techniques sponge does an almost identical job at blending out foundation to the Original Beauty Blender. The only difference is that the Beauty Blender is less dense than the Real Techniques sponge, so it’s much softer, squishier and bouncier, which makes it more comfortable to use. This also gives the Beauty Blender a slightly more natural feel and finish.
Verdict: Beauty Blender
Because the Beauty Blender is less dense, it seems to hold the least amount of water and therefore absorbs less product. Both sponges give you pretty quick application and help cover a large area in a short amount of time. However, if you’re after fuller coverage, it might be better to stick with the Beauty Blender. This is definitely a reason the beauty blender is better in the beauty blender vs. real techniques competition!
Verdict: Beauty Blender
It’s no secret that the Real Techniques sponge is considerably cheaper than the Beauty Blender. On Amazon, you can get two Real Techniques sponges for £5, while the Beauty Blender comes in at £15.35. If you’re on a budget, then it’s probably best to go with the Real Techniques sponge.
Verdict: Real Techniques
While the Real Techniques sponge is cheaper, its denser texture means you have to work extra hard to get the water out of it. This means it can be prone to ripping. With the Beauty Blender, the colour does fade after some washes but in my own experience it has been less prone to ripping and only needs to be replaced after 6 months.
Verdict: Beauty Blender
It doesn’t hurt to have aesthetic looking tools! Beauty Blender definitely wins out in the colour category as they offer their sponge in a range of colours, with some limited edition colours coming out each season. If colour and looks matter to you, then you might have to opt for the sponge with the heftier price tag!
Verdict: Beauty Blender
Looking at the pros and cons of both sponges, it’s clear that the Original Beauty Blender is the winner! So, if you have the money for the sponge, it’s definitely worth the splurge. That’s not to say that the Real Techniques sponge doesn’t do a good job at blending out makeup, and there are some areas where it goes a step further than the Beauty Blender. If spending £15 on a Beauty Blender is simply too much for you, the Real Techniques sponge would be a great alternative.
