Are You Overqualified For Your Job?

Are you overqualified for your job? Do you think you’re stuck in a rut at work? Or maybe you don’t feel like your job is taking you where you want to be? This might be sign that you’re overqualified for the job you’re in. Read on to see what signs you shouldn’t ignore if you think you’re overqualified for a job. So let’s find out: are you overqualified for your job?

1. You’re bored

This is perhaps the most obvious sign that you’re overqualified for a job. If you find yourself bored or constantly looking for ways to pass the time, then it might just be that the job you’re in is far too easy for you. It might be time to start looking at other options!

2. You’re always looking for more work

Similar to the first point, if you constantly find yourself finishing ahead of everyone else and looking for more things to do, then perhaps you are overqualified for the job you’re in. The skills you have should help you complete your tasks, but it shouldn’t be a no-brainer. If you’re asking for more work, then things are just too easy for your skill set!

3. You’re not learning anything new

You shouldn’t come to work or a job knowing everything. Having a job is also a learning experience. If you feel like you show up at work knowing everything you need to know, then don’t ignore it — this is probably a sign that it’s time to leave your job.

4. You have more experience than your coworkers

If you find that you know much more than your coworkers and have far more experience than them, then this is a serious red flag. In a work place, people around you should have about the same or similar work experience, and it should feel like you’re all contributing the same amount of effort. If not, then you’re probably overqualified for your job.

5. People always turn to you for advice

Similarly, do people always seem to ask you for help? Even your boss? Then this is a sure sign you’re overqualified for the position you’re in. Consider trying out a more challenging job where you don’t feel like you’re the person everyone turns to for help.

6. You do more than you’re asked

Overachievement is another sign of being overqualified for a job. Do you go above and beyond your tasks? Do you always find that your boss and coworkers are constantly congratulating you on your achievements? It might be because you’re doing too much! This definitely a sign that you’re overqualified for the job you’re in.

7. Work doesn’t feel challenging

If you complete tasks without even having to try, then this is an obvious sign you’re overqualified for your job. You should be given work that challenges you and pushes you to try harder and use your head! If not, then consider working somewhere else.

8. You find yourself staying quiet

Nobody enjoys feeling like a know-it-all. If you find yourself not wanting to speak up during group meetings, then it’s probably because you’re afraid of coming off like you know everything. This probably means that you do know everything, and if you find yourself stopping yourself from offering input, it could be a sign that your job is not right for you.

9. Your experience goes beyond the listed job requirements

This is pretty straightforward, but people still ignore this fact! Sometimes, you’ll take a job just because you want to be part of a specific company, even if it means that you do work that doesn’t meet your actual experience and qualifications. Don’t take a job you’re overqualified for simply because it’s part of your “dream” company!

10. Your peers tell you you’re overqualified

You’re probably reading this article because you think you’re overqualified or someone you know has told you you’re overqualified for your job. If everyone around you is saying so, then they’re probably right! Don’t ignore what people are saying, if you meet even half of the points on this list, then you’re definitely overqualified for your job. Or do these points bring anyone to mind? If so, you should ask them “hey are you overqualified for your job?”
