Dear unique individual,
Whether you’re at school, the workplace or on a group vacation, finding your feet is hard enough, but trying to find those who fit in the same shoes as you feels like a never-ending witch hunt. You may feel alone now, but just know that this is only temporary. It’s hard dealing with the thought that you don’t fit in and that you have no place in where you are. I am writing this letter to let you know that this is not the end of the world.
As painstakingly cliché as it sounds, there really are others out there who feel the same way. With so many others around us, we’re bound to feel that we’re not understood or accepted in the way that we would like to be. However, this doesn’t mean that we should accept that this is how it’s going to be. Honestly, don’t feel the need to compromise for anyone in the hopes that it will make you feel better, because it won’t. Pretence is the worst kind of compromise – believe me, I’ve been there. Sure, we’ve all got flaws but somebody else is always in the same boat as you.
Just because you don’t fit in, it doesn’t mean that something’s wrong with you. Not being accepted hurts… a lot, but what if we were all the same? Nothing would be interesting about us. Our uniqueness is what makes us human, and it is our best feature of all. Try not to feel the need to conform either, as this will only make you feel bad about yourself and decrease your chances in finding others who you can truly relate with. If you’re hell-bent on trying to please everybody then you’ll be the one to suffer. Don’t worry too much about what other people think.
We all get stuck in our little bubbles from time to time, pondering on the possibility of sharing jokes, and feeling comfortable with someone else; to have your own circle or friendship group; someone else who can entertain the realm of our unique minds. Well I’m here to tell you that you will find them. If you don’t feel comfortable where you are then you can do something to change that. Everything is temporary so just because you don’t fit in at first, it doesn’t mean this will be the case forever. Sometimes it takes time to find your clique or for someone to gravitate towards you.
At the end of the day, you do what makes you happy. We live in a world where we are pressured to fit in, to follow this group or get this latest gadget because everyone else has it but its not always a case of whether we really want it. Do the things you want to do and be confident about it. You’re finding it hard to fit in and you want someone to share moments with ASAP. Of course you do its in our nature to want to be understood, so go put yourself out there. Make a suggestion to that group or that classmate to try the things that you like to do and they just might surprise you.
So they think you’re weird? Forget ’em. If someone can’t appreciate you for who you are, chances are they don’t have enough spice in their life and you just add more flavour to the pot. The world is a big place and there may only be one you, but there is always someone who shares something in common with you. For now, just keep doing you.
