Amazing Women In The Music Industry You Need To Listen To RN

Day after day great new tunes are being released and many of them by creative, wonderful and talented women and it’s time to celebrate them. Being in the music industry can be difficult for a woman due to stereotyping, the over-sexualisation of them and the pressure to look a certain way but many female artists are breaking boundaries and defying odds. Here are some amazing women in music you need to listen to right now!

Lizzo

Known for her hit “Truth Hurts” Lizzo is definitely an artist you have to watch out for. She recently rocked the mainstage at Glastonbury and has girls worldwide singing about not needing a man. Lizzo was born in Detroit, Michigan and began her career in rapping while relocating and living in Texas. She’s done many pieces of work over the years but has only just reached the peak of her career. The perfect example of persistence and never giving up.

As well as all of the above what makes Lizzo so great is her morality and standing up for what she believes in. She promotes a positive body image, encourages girls to love themselves no matter what supports LGBTQ+ rights and calls for tougher gun control laws.

Lady Gaga

While Lady Gaga is now a famous household name it is important not to overlook all she has been through and how far she has come. Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta in 1986 in New York, Lady Gaga didn’t have the easiest of music careers. To make ends meet she took three jobs until she finally got her big break and even when she was climbing the charts she still received hate. Bullying her looks, her sexuality, and her music.

But Lady Gaga didn’t let this stop her and she became a forefront advocate for LGBTQ+ rights worldwide, launched a non-profit organization that focuses on youth empowerment and became one of the world’s best-selling music artists. She’s known for her unconventionality, provocative work, and visual experimentation and we love her for it.

Kehlani

A wide representation can be hard to come by in the music industry but twenty-four-year-old singer, songwriter, rapper and dancer Kehlani describes herself as black, white, Native American, Filipino, Mexican, and Spanish. Seeing women of colour succeed is amazing and something we should all be hoping for and working towards.

Growing up wasn’t always easy. Kehlani was adopted and raised by her aunt when her mother, who had a drug addiction, served time in prison and her father, who also had a drug addiction, died when she was a toddler. Kehlani shows that your past does not define you and anyone can succeed in being a woman in music.

Grace VanderWaal

Even though only young at fifteen Grace VanderWaal is taking the industry by storm with her pop-indie aesthetic. She began her musical career by posting videos of her original songs and covers on YouTube and performing at open mic nights. She’s a big name over in America from winning the eleventh season of America’s Got Talent in 2016 but still has far to come overseas and I would love for her to be as well known in the UK.

She is set to star in the Disney+ film Stargirl in 2o20, so we will be seeing a lot more of her worldwide. I can’t wait. Grace is the perfect example of how you shouldn’t let your age be a limitation.

Women in music are making waves and I’m so proud and thankful. The women in music above and so many more are giving us great songs to listen to, dance to and be inspired by. Girl power!
