However, outside of the most popular ones like Santorini, a lot of the best islands remain largely unknown. With their whitewashed buildings, bustling tavernas and beautiful beaches, backpacking around the Greek islands really is a joy. So, if you’re looking for some travel inspiration, here are some amazing greek islands that you have to backpack in. 

Mykonos

Mykonos is one of those places that it’s impossible not to fall in love with. Located in the heart of the Cyclades Island group, Mykonos is primarily known for its summer party atmosphere- and while it’s super clubs like Paradiso are undoubtedly incredible, there are so many more reasons to visit Mykonos too.

For photographers, the narrow streets with their whitewashes buildings are an absolute dream to explore. Every corner is a new photo opportunity, whether you’re strolling along by the iconic windmills or enjoying a cocktail at the oceanfront ‘Little Venice’. For foodies, the Greek food in Mykonos is second to none and when you just want to sit down and enjoy the sun, there are plenty of beaches for you to relax on too.

Santorini

Not just great for honeymooners, Santorini is an incredible island to backpack in. With its picturesque town, Oia, climbing up the edge of the cliff, it’s no surprise that Santorini is on everyone’s bucket list. Santorini really is one of the most beautiful places on the planet and the view over the ocean from the caldera never gets old.

A lot of people are put off of Santorini by the prices however a trip to the Greek Island needn’t be expensive. You can save money by staying in one of the hostels or campsites and eating cheaply, picking up food from the bakeries.

Ios

When it comes to backpacking in the Greek Islands, Ios really is the life and soul of the party. There are loads of great clubs, bars and beach clubs here and it’s fairly inexpensive, hence why it’s so popular with younger backpackers. However, there is a quiet side to the island too. Ios also boasts some of the best beaches and picturesque towns around so, it’s the ideal place to go if you enjoying exploring in the day and partying at night.

Milos

Milos is starting to become a favourite with Influencers and for good reason- this island boasts some of the most unique and diverse beaches in Greece. These include Sarakinio, a white volcanic rock beach that can only be described as ‘moon-like’, Mantrakia with its cute colourful fishing huts and Kleftiko where you can take a boat ride and explore the many caves there.

Paros

Paros is one of the best Greek islands to backpack in so it’s surprising that it’s still largely unknown to most people. This stunning islands boasts incredible beaches, Pinteresque towns and the best waterspouts around. When it comes to backpacking, you have to visit both Parikia, the main town with plenty of bars and restaurants to explore and Noosa, a chic, bohemian port town and the nicest place to enjoy a chilled evening.

Corfu

With so much natural beauty, it’s impossible to not love the Greek island of Corfu. Unlike many of the Greek Islands, Corfu’s Venitian, British and French roots have left their mark on the island meaning that Corfu’s old town is really unique in its appearance. This Unesco world heritage town is one of the most Picturesque and fascinating places to explore. What’s more, for lovers of natural beauty, there are plenty of beaches and walks for you to enjoy.
