5 Alternatives To Denim Shorts This Summer

Are you not a fan of denim shorts but don’t know what else you can wear during the summer holidays? This is a list of 5 alternatives that you can wear!

Are you bored of wearing denim shorts every summer, or have you never felt comfortable in denim shorts and don’t know what else you can wear? This is how I felt until last summer, as I thought my only option was to wear denim shorts in the summer heat despite not enjoying wearing them! However, when I started trying new options that were originally out of my comfort zone, I found that not only did I feel more comfortable, but I also found styles which suited me better. So, if you are looking for a change up this summer for your usual denim shorts, whether it is just to be more exploratory in your outfit choice or if you just don’t like wearing denim shorts, here are 5 alternatives that you can wear this summer holidays!

1. Paper bag shorts

If you enjoy wearing shorts but you don’t like the cut, fit or feel of denim shorts, then paper bag shorts will be perfect for you. First of all, these shorts offer a different silhouette to that of traditional denim shorts, so where a denim short usually draws attention to the legs by being figure hugging and quite short in length, the paper bag short brings more attention to the waist. This happens because the loose fit of paper bag shorts means that they don’t hug your legs but do tie in tight at the waist, which creates a flattering small waist for any wearer. Furthermore, as paper bag shorts usually come in cotton material, they offer a much wider variety of colours and patterns then denim shorts do!

2. Sundress

Sundresses are honestly one of the best things you can wear in hot weather as this is what they are made for! They are basically all made of light materials and are not tight fitting from the waist down, and so they keep you nice and cool during the hot summer days. You can also buy sundress is basically any cut, pattern, colour or length- your options are unlimited! Furthermore, as sundresses are so varied, they are also very versatile; if you kick off your sandals, put on a pair of heels and some statement jewellery, you can effortlessly take your look from day to night!

3. Wrap skirt

Much like sundresses, wrap skirts – or any midi or maxi, floaty skirt – are so varied in style and print and also extremely versatile depending on what you wear with it. Pair with a crop top on a hot summer weekend for a casual look, with a silk shirt and heels for a fancier evening look, or just throw it on over your bikini or swimsuit at the seaside for a laid-back, beachy vibe! While it may seem that the long material of a midi or maxi dress would be hotter than wearing denim shorts, this is not the case! The light, floaty material of the skirt and the slit created by the wrap will keep you nice and cool during the holiday heat.

4. Culottes

If you feel at your most comfortable in jeans or trousers for the majority of the year but find them too hot during the summer heat, the culottes are perfect for you! While it may seem that they would be hotter than wearing denim shorts as they cover all of the leg (apart from the cheeky ankle) you couldn’t be more wrong. The loose fit, light material and shorter length allow for an airy summer trouser. Furthermore, culottes are brilliant for summer work wear! If you are finding yourself too hot in the office wearing suit trousers or sweating profusely in the cafe you waitress at wearing jeans, throw on a pair of culottes! They’ll keep you looking smart while feeling cool and not about to faint.

5. Playsuit

Playsuits are again another piece of clothing that is so varied in style! There are playsuits that are smarter with long sleeves styled after suits, playsuits which are more tomboyish and lose fitting, and playsuits which look like dresses – these ones are great if you want to look like you’re wearing a dress while doing summer activities such as cycling or hiking. Again, playsuits are made of a light material that will keep you just as cool as when you wore denim shorts, but they are something different and much more unique in style. Just remember to plan your toilet trips well as the only downside of a playsuit is you have to take everything off when going to the bathroom!
