A Guide To Staying Healthy At Uni

Staying healthy at uni can be really difficult, especially with all the binge drinking, fast food and the notorious freshers flu. This can often lead to prolonged periods of colds, flus or lack of energy. As a uni student who wants to be enjoying their social lives and thriving at university, being ill should be the least of your worries. So, here are the top 5 tips every student needs to try in oder to stay healthy at uni!

1. Take Vitamins

Taking a daily multi-vitamin is an amazing preventative tactic to avoiding illness’ and staying in tip-top shape. Vitamins can help with reproduction, maintenance, growth and regulation of bodily processes. This will ensure that your body is receiving all the vitamins and minerals it needs to maintain the health and strength it needs to battle against freshers flu and bodily exhaustion.

2. Drink Water

Drinking water and staying hydrated at university can be something commonly overlooked by many students which can lead to dehydration, headaches and is one less thing helping you fight against illness at uni. Simply get yourself a reusable water bottle that you can take everywhere with you and constantly fill it up, aiming to drink around 2 litres of water a day. This will give you the extra boost of hydration you need and will help fight illness as well as repairing your brain and body. Plus, the more you drink water, the more you’ll end up craving it, win-win!

3. Eat Fruit And Veg

As a student, it can be super easy to get into the habit of eating microwave meals and takeaways every night. However, this is not money smart or health smart. Constantly consuming large portions of processed foods which will inevitably break the bank, will be one of the biggest contributors to ill health and weight gain. Providing your body with nutritious foods such as fruit and veg will help combat any illness and will nourish your body with everything it needs to maintain itself properly and repair itself, two vital things when trying to maintain a good social and academic life.

4. Limit Alcohol Consumption

Although alcohol is often the start of many friendships, relationships and good times at university, it’s also the biggest cause of illness’, grogginess and major hangovers. Constantly consuming copious amounts of alcohol will damage your internal organs, mainly your liver, which can result in major health problems and premature ageing. To avoid this, limit the amount of times you go out per week and/or limit the amount of alcohol you consume when you do go out. Having 3 or 4 drinks on a night out will suffice and any more is simply damaging your body more than necessary. Plus, who wants to be waking up feeling awful and hungover AF most days of the week, because I certainly don’t!

5. Get Moving

Taking walks everyday, doing a simple at-home workout or going to an exercise class at the local gym will all help in maintaining your health. The fresh air will give you mental and physical clarity and getting your blood pumping and heart rate rising is super good, and vital, for your physical health. Regular exercise can also increase your energy levels which, let’s admit it, every student needs a little more of, helps to maintain the health of your skin and helps maintain healthy muscles and bones, so this tip should definitely be implemented into any students everyday life.
