8 Signs You Have High Porosity Hair

Knowing the signs you have high porosity hair will help you take a better care of it. High porosity hair can be the result of sun exposure, harsh chemicals, dye, bleach, high heat or genetics. If your hair is dry and difficult to manage no matter what you do, this article is for you!

1. You hair does not feel smooth when you touch it

The main characteristic of high porosity hair is that the hair cuticle layer is raised unlike medium and low porosity hair. It makes it feel quite bumpy on the touch. This means that the hair absorbs moisture quickly, but, lose it just as fast. It’s difficult for high porosity hair to retain moisture.

2. Your hair is always craving for moisture

Does your hair absorb products quickly? If you notice that your hair “drinks” moisture very rapidly, then chances are that you have high porosity hair. It’s easy to get the products in, but harder to make them stay on the hair.

3. Your hair dries quickly

Does your hair feel dull and dry? Do you have to reapply a large amount of product on a daily basis in order for your hair to stay moisturized? Like I said earlier, porous hair tends to quickly absorb water. The downside is that it releases it just as easily, making the hair dry and prone to breakage. You can use heavier creams and oils to retain the moisture. You can also try layering products and adopt the LOC (or LCO) methods.

4. Your hair absorbs products easily

Since the cuticles layer of your hair is raised, it can take any products in quickly. It might be water as well as any chemical treatments you submit your hair too. Beware, it also means that your hair absorbs the wrong chemical as easily. Getting your hair dyed or relaxed is relatively easy.

5. Your hair lack elasticity

Is your hair not bouncing and lack flexibility? Does it break every time you try to manipulate it? To restore elasticity, try to stop using harsh ingredients on your hair and use products rich in protein to fortify and strengthen cuticles. Protein will temporarily fill the holes present in your hair shaft and make your hair easier to style. Protein treatment should not be done too often. Too much protein will cause the hair to become stiff and break.

6. You experience a lot of breakages

This one is closely related to elasticity because breakage means that your hair lacks the ability to bounce and stretch. High porosity hair is more likely to cause breakage because of the gaps present in the cuticle layer. You need to do some protein treatment to fill the gaps as well as a moisturizing treatment because dry hair also causes breakage. However, be careful to not protein or moisture overload your hair. It’s up to you to find the right balance between protein and moisturizing treatments.

7. Your hair tangles easily

Does your hair tangle like crazy when dry? It hair tangles because your cuticles are raised, causing excessive knots in the hair. The lack of moisture in your hair only makes it worse. To resolve this problem, try detangling your hair with a moisturizing leave-in conditioner and a wide tooth comb.

8. Your hair doesn’t shine

Low shine is a recurring issue? Highly porous hair does not shine much because of the lack of moisture. The hair strands tend to have difficulties holding on to oils. To obtain shine you need to apply lots of liquids and oils.
