The 10 Types Of Students You Meet At College

When you first walk on to a college campus, you can easily get overwhelmed by all the buildings, the activities, and especially all the people. College is a time where you’ll meet tons of people, from all over the country and all over the world. Despite the diverse cultures, backgrounds, etc., people typically fall into 10 different types that occupy and are easily recognizable on a college campus. (Please note though, human beings are complex creatures and we all have personalities and characters so people can fall into multiple categories or even none of them. These are generalizations and stereotypes which do not always and actually doesn’t encompass or define a person.) Below are the 10 types of students you meet at college!

1. The Frat Bro/ Sorority Girl

I’d say the most recognizable group of people at college are those who are a part of Greek life. They’re usually wearing their Greek letters, talking about raves, formals, date parties, and usually exceptionally good-looking.

2. The Super-Genius, Mr./Ms. 4.0

These people are extremely intelligent and will most definitely change the world. They glide through school with ease, getting A’s like they’re getting paid. They could probably teach a class better than some professors.

3. The Foreign-Exchange Student

College is definitely a bigger pond, filled with a ton of diverse fish, compared to the small puddle that is high school. Foreign-exchange students are one of the more unique groups special to college campuses. With various cultures in a small area, foreign-exchange students provide new perspectives and insight into different values, customs, beliefs, and traditions. All of which are a part of the learning experience and atmosphere that a college campus strives for.

4. The Student Athlete

Jocks are just as prominent in college society as much as they are in high school, possibly even more. Athletes can be identified by their strong and fit forms and their specifically labeled backpacks. Because of their talent on the field, pool, court, etc., athletes are like heroes on most campuses.

5. The Artist

The art students are always impeccably dressed and overflowing with amazing ideas. Their ingenuity, creativity, and individualism separates them from the rest, making brilliant and beautiful works of art.

6. The Student Activist

With such controversial times happening now, there’s always a group of students ready to stand up for their causes, whether it’s political, social, religious, economic, etc. Especially on liberal campuses, protests and marches are common during tumultuous times, with these student activists leading and attracting attention for their causes.

7. The Stoner

Unlike in high school, stoners in college are hard to differentiate from the average student. Some are your stereotypical stoner that barely goes to class and barely passes. However, some college stoners have mastered the art of multitasking and balanced their studies with their side hobby, making it hard to label them on first impression.

8. The Hipster

With stores like Urban Outfitters commercializing the hipster trend with clothing and accessories, it’s no wonder that hipsters are very noticeable and present on college campuses these days. These vegan and organic eating, Birkenstock-wearing, bearded, and vibrantly colored hair folk provide an individualistic and personally distinct look that rejects the mainstream trends.

9. The Partier

If you go out on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, you’ll see these people. People within the Greek system usually incorporate themselves into this group as well. At competitive schools, a lot of people blow off steam and stress by partying, maintaining that “work hard, play hard” motto. Partiers, like stoners, can be hard to identify by appearances alone because of the nocturnal nature of the party scene.

10. The Entertainer.

Every school has a group of super talented people in every field of entertainment. Think of the person that is always involved in plays, the one that join choirs and acapella groups. There’s also the comedian, the one who joins the improv clubs and puts on skits and comedy shows, to lighten up the stressful atmosphere that encompasses college. They all have big hopes of one day making it big and becoming the star they’ve always dreamed of being.
