LA is a melting pot of interesting personalities and cultures. Like any other transplant, I moved from New York to LA right after graduating to pursue my dreams in entertainment. After spending a couple of months here, I’ve met some very interesting people in this city. Whether it’s the Lyft driver who brags about the celebrities they’ve driven or the beauty guru who thinks they’re an A-list celebrity. If you’re a recent transplant to LA, this will prepare you for the different types of people you meet in LA!
LA is filled with actors hoping to become the next big hit in Hollywood. They’re usually working as a waiter or Lyft driver on the side. Actors will always let you know that their an actor. They will talk about an audition they landed or re enact a character to prove to you that their the right fit for a role. Some actors make acting seem like a cult. I’ve had many actors try to persuade me to take an acting class. If you ever come across an actor just let them talk about juggling their reality and dreams. This is one of the many types of people you meet in LA.
Beauty Gurus move to LA to be closer to opportunities with companies and to be around a creative environment. Some beauty gurus tend to act as if they’re professional make up artist. They will constantly remind you about a company that is sponsoring them and ask you to use their discount code.
Comedians by far have the best personalities in LA. They share many similarities with actors when it comes to side hustles and passion towards their career. Comedians will talk about being heckled at comedy show cases. If your Lyft driver is a comedian expect them to perform a whole show for you and expect you to laugh after every corny joke.
Name Droppers are people who constantly mention celebrities, executives and public figures in conversation to impress you. Let’s be real, we’ve all had name dropping moments. LA is infamous of being filled with name droppers. Name Droppers are usually socialites, the entourage to a celebrity, and someone who’s rich. They feed off the attention of people thinking they’re cool because they were sitting a few tables away from Emily Ratajkowski at Catch LA. This is one of the most common types of people you meet in LA.
Like the Beauty Guru, Instagram Models move to LA with dreams to help with their modeling. They’re usually looked down upon in the fashion industry. Every outfit they’re wearing is usually provided for free from companies like Fashion Nova, PrettyLittleThings and Boohoo. If you live in an apartment complex in Hollywood expect to see them everywhere. They have personal photoshoots around the building and will ask you to help out. If they use Facetune heavily expect them to look completely different in person.
East Coast Transplant from New York and Boston are funny but refreshing. They have a love and hate relationship with LA. They will complain about the Italian food in LA not tasting as great as it is in Little Italy and The North End. In conversations, East Coast transplants will constantly remind you that they’re from the East. They love talking about how terrible LA’s public transportation is compared to the subways in their hometowns major city. They usually live in LA for a few years then move back home. As an East Coast Transplant from New York, I fit in this category. This is another one of the types of people you meet in LA.
LA Locals come in many packages. Some believe that the whole world revolves around LA while others know that there are other major cities outside of California. I’ve met locals who have no desire of ever taking a trip outside of LA. Locals in the Santa Monica area are different from those in DTLA. Santa Monica locals usually like to stay in the West side of town because of the beach. DTLA locals enjoy being surrounded by skyscrapers, they claim DTLA is their mini NYC. Locals are the best when it comes to finding hidden places and cheating the terrible traffic in LA. LA Locals suck at driving, they speed on the freeway and don’t know how to switch lanes.
Living in LA gives you the chance of meeting a celebrity. Celebrities are regular people who get paid tons of money for working in the entertainment industry. They’re often idolized by fans and seen as public figures. Celebrities are willing to interact with others depending on their mood and place setting. If paparazzi is all over the place, they will glady decline but if they’re in a chill environment or industry party expect a conversation. If you ever come across a celebrity, please remember that they’re a regular person like you.
