TV Show Quotes That Any College Student Will Relate To
College students are complicated people. We’re often exhausted, working hard, and hiding our pain through the veil of humor. To cope with the struggles being a student involves, we turn to TV shows as means of an escape. I present to you eight TV quotes that anyone in college can relate to (myself included):
1. The Yogurt Argument, Schitt’s Creek (2015)
We’ve all been in this situation before. Either you’re Alexis in the scenario, or you’re David, stealing food from one of your roommates. If you’re guilty of snacking on your roommate’s Ben and Jerry’s, it’s best that you turn yourself in. I sympathize with Alexis’ anger; food thieves are the absolute worst.
2. Walk of Shame, Fleabag (2016)
Oh, the dreaded walk of shame. It’s hard to avoid it in your college career. Some days, you’ll think that you look better than you actually do when you’re headed back to your dorm. In reality, you look very much like someone in need of some water and a good night of sleep. Fleabag’s pain is all too real, though unlike her, I would have fought the guy who called me out.
3. No Work Should Be For Free, Chewing Gum (2015)
When you’re in college, any work outside of classes should pay you. Why put in extra time and energy to do something for free? Whether it’s editing my friends’ essays or driving my roommates around creation, I expect to be compensated somehow. Maybe that just makes me a bad person. The British TV show Chewing Gum perfectly sums up my mentality when it comes to favors.
4. Leslie Knope’s Sleep Schedule, Parks and Recreation (2009)
Honestly, Leslie Knope is one of the most relatable TV show characters. Everything she does is iconic. I vividly remember the scene where she falls down a ditch and gives a weak thumbs up. I wish I related more to her strong work ethic than to her embarrassing moments. This quote particularly resonates with me; when you have classes, extracurriculars, a job, and a social life, you’re left with little time to sleep. When I do get more than my usual amount (which isn’t far off from Leslie’s), I, too, am “a little disorientated.”
5. The Night Out Dilemma, Bob’s Burgers (2011)
To go out or not to go out? That’s the dilemma many college students face on a Friday night. Sometimes, it’s more tempting to stay inside and order Uber Eats with your friends. There’s always someone in your friend group that will pressure you to hit up the frats, and reluctantly, you’ll cave and join them. Like Bob, you probably won’t enjoy yourself at a place you didn’t want to go to in the first place.
6. Sad Girl Hours, The Office (2005)
College is a whirlwind of emotions. Michael Scott is one of those TV show characters that somehow capture a college student’s despair, despite not being in college himself. Who hasn’t had a moment where they’ve cried to Mitski in their car? Whether you bombed a midterm or experienced a breakup, chances are you’ve cranked up the sad songs and let your feelings flow.
7. Undeclared Major, Modern Family (2009)
Not everyone knows what they want to do after college. If you’re one of those people, that’s completely fine! You, like Luke from the TV show Modern Family, have so much time to figure life out. If being a professional medal-getter appeals to you, then by all means, go for it. It’s alright to set your major as “undeclared” until you sort things out.
8. The Bad Place, The Good Place (2016)
We all have somewhere on campus that makes us think, “This is The Bad Place.” Though it’s not comparable to The Bad Place on the TV show The Good Place, which is basically Hell, your Bad Place never fails to terrify you. Maybe it’s a classroom you had a particularly awful lecture in. Or maybe it’s your old, crappy freshman dorm building. Whatever your personal Bad Place is, it’ll always haunt you on campus.
9. A Typical Seminar, The Office (2005)
I wish I had the courage to talk to my professors the same way Kelly Kapoor talks to Ryan. There are many instances where I wish I could ask them, “How dare you?”. Imagine blurting this out when your professor announces an essay at the last minute, or when your roommate doesn’t pick up after themselves. Whatever the situation, Kelly’s saying what we’re all thinking.
10. Student Loan Struggles, Bob’s Burgers (2011)
Student budgets will be the death of me. I consider myself to be a materialistic person, so now that I have to limit what I buy, I can’t stand it. Whenever I go back home for the holidays, I remember what life was like not having ramen for dinner every night. Better yet, I’m reminded what it was like to sleep in a comfortable, no-roommate, non-twin bed.
11. Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid, Schitt’s Creek (2015)
There’s always that one person who won’t shut up in class. Either they talk for hours on end, and/or they try to assert the most ridiculous, Devil’s Advocate opinion. Whenever these people start to speak, David’s quote rings in my mind. I am both uninterested in this person’s opinion and unwilling to argue against them.
12. Senior Year, Sex and the City (1998)
No matter how old you are, you’re still not quite an adult. At least, being in college doesn’t feel like being an adult. I am still as clueless and immature as I was in elementary school. But since ignorance is bliss, I’ll try to enjoy my time in college while I still can. The adult world can wait.
As you can see, TV shows aren’t entirely useless. Some shows are outlets for us to project our own suffering onto. It’s always good to find the humor in a bad situation, so why not turn to TV?
