10 Trends From The 2000s That Just Won’t Go Away
The 2000s were…interesting. The trends of the time ranged from bandana headbands to jeans with no pockets, and, of course, visible underwear. What a time to be alive!
Our fashion icons were Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, Britney Spears, and Beyonce. It was a wild time with huge belt buckles and Juicy tracksuits. So which of these trends are still around today?
1. Tube Tops As Seen On Cameron Diaz
Tube tops have always been in fashion. They’re sexy in a subtle way, showing off your arms, shoulders, and collarbones (those can be sexy, too!). They’re effortless and look perfect for summer no matter how you style them.
2. Patchwork Denim As Seen On Christina Aguilera
There was a lot going on with Xtina in the 2000s, and this outfit is only one of them. If we look past the chunky gold body jewelry, the lingerie, and the pastel-colored braids, we can focus on the patchwork denim. We’ve been seeing this trend a lot lately, admittedly missing the side zippers and low-rise waist.
3. Designer Track Suits As Seen On Britney Spears
Juicy velour tracksuits were all the rage in the early 2000s. Remember? The ones with JUICY COUTURE bedazzled across the butt? It was a simpler time.
Well, we haven’t strayed very far from this look. Adidas has made the designer tracksuit popular again. Except the jeweled words across our butts are now three stripes down our legs.
4. Name Necklaces As Seen On Carrie Bradshaw
The name necklace experienced a whole new resurgence after everyone saw Carrie Bradshaw rocking one in Sex and the City. But since then we’ve branched out. Name necklaces are still popular, but there are also Zodiac necklaces, and some girls even where their partner’s name around their neck. How romantic!
5. Chokers As Seen On Lizzie McGuire
Lizzie McGuire was a serious fashion inspiration back in the day. Her style was totally 2000s, and she helped make the choker mainstream with middle school and high school girls. This trend continues today. Thank you, Lizzie!
6. Newsboy Caps As Seen On Christina Aguilera
It’s clear that Xtina was pressing the boundaries of fashion in the 2000s. From the skirt to the shirt (can it actually be considered a shirt?), the makeup, the hair, the boots…where do I start? If we can ignore all that, then we’re left with the newsboy cap which has become popular over the last couple of years. Style it with a teddy bear sweater or a scarf as a shirt, either way, your hat will look bitchin’.
7. Graphic Tees As Seen On Christina Milian
Quirky sayings on our T-shirts? Revolutionary. However, a lot has changed with this trend. The 2000s were all about ourselves.
Hence Christina Milian’s proclamation that she’s “Queen of the Universe.” Now, it’s easy to find shirts that declare a different sort of sentiment, one that’s a little less “it’s all about me.”
8. Visible Underwear As Seen On Rihanna
It’s true that Rihanna can make anything look good, even showing off her underwear. We’re even more daring today, as is RiRi, like rocking see-through shirts over sexy bralettes.
9. Colored Sunglasses As Seen On Beyonce
Colored sunglasses add a touch of personality to any summer outfit. Beyonce was making them look good in the early 2000s, and the trend is still going strong today. Red, yellow, blue–they come in every color and every style to go with any outfit.
10. Leggings As Pants As Seen On Sienna Miller
One day leggings were not a thing, and the next day, everyone and their freakin’ moms were wearing leggings. And the trend has never gone away. We’re all guilty of wearing leggings as pants when we’re feeling lazy or uninspired. And as a real fashion statement, too.
The 2000s bring back a lot of memories. Do we wish people still walked around with their thongs hanging out of their non-pocketed denim? Maybe not. But as I write this article in my Adidas tracksuit, I can’t help but thank the 2000s for all they’ve taught us and brought us.
