So, that cute guy you’ve been daydreaming about finally asked you out on a date — YAY! You and your friends celebrate by going shopping so that you can find the most perfect first date outfit. As you are get ready for the big date, you start to feel a little nervous and wonder what exactly you will talk about. If you are stuck and trying to brainstorm a few questions to ask or things to say, don’t worry! Here is your guide for 10 topics to talk about on a first date.
This is a great first question that will help break the ice and end all of the first date awkwardness. As soon as he picks you up, thank him, and then ask him how he is doing and how his day is going. Be sure to pay attention to his responses, and ask follow up questions or make comments. Make sure you tell him how you are doing too. If you are nervous, tell him! You will probably feel better after you let him know, and chances are he is feeling just as nervous too.
This is another great question that will help break the ice. You should ask him about his day, like what he did earlier that day, or the week leading up to the date. You can follow up by asking questions and telling him about your day, too. You are bound to find a few commonalities between your responses so you will naturally have more topics to discuss together!
Once you break the ice a little bit, you can start asking more personal questions, like about his favorite hobbies and activities. Ask him what he likes to do for fun and why he enjoys it. You may find that you have similar hobbies and interests, which is great to talk about too! You can bond over these things and possibly plan future dates by doing these hobbies together.
Another way to get to know him is by asking him where he is from. Ask questions about his hometown, like what it is like there, his favorite part about his hometown, where his favorite restaurants are, etc. Be sure to tell him about your hometown too, as he needs to know things about you to get to know you better too!
This is a great question to ask because most people love to talk about family and close friends. Ask him if he has any siblings, what their names and ages are, etc. Ask about his parents, and his extended family. You can even get creative and ask which family member he looks up to the most and why. You can really learn a lot about someone when they talk about their family, so be sure to pay attention to what he says! Be sure to ask questions and engage in commentary, as he will feel more willing to share this information with you if you seem engaged and interested.
Most guys either play/have played sports, or love to watch sports, so it’s always a safe bet to talk about sports. You can start by asking him what his favorite sport is, and who is favorite sports teams are. You can then ask him if he plays/played sports and why he enjoyed it so much.
Everyone loves to talk about food so be sure to ask him what his favorite foods are. Also ask him about his favorite restaurants, and if there are any foods that he can’t live without. You can even ask him if he likes to cook and why/why not.
This is another topic that can start a great conversation. Ask him what his favorite type of music is, who is favorite music artists or bands are, etc. You can also talk about musical festivals and concerts that you have recently gone to. If you find that you are interested in a similar type of music or artist, maybe plan to go see them in concert together!
This is another great topic that will get him talking. Ask him what his favorite movies and tv shows are to watch. Tell him yours, and see if you have any in common. Also, recommend a few shows for him to watch and ask him to do the same for you. Watch a few of the shows or movies he tells you to so the next time you see him you guys can talk about it!
If he is a student, then ask him about his choice of major, why he chose it and what he wants to do with it after he graduates. If he graduated and already started his career, ask him about his job, what he does, why he likes it, and what he plans to do 10-15 years from now. This will create unique conversations where you will learn more about his future career and/or academic goals.
