5 Topics To Never Discuss On A First Date

Dating can be hard, we all know that. Finding the right person and then actually convincing/tricking them into going on a date with you is hard enough as is. And one you start a relationship with this person, you have to do everything in your power to get them to stick around beyond the first date.

You never want to go to fast on a first date, so keep your conversations more than friendly, but not too personal. A bad conversation can ruin any chance of a relationship or could even make your date avoid you at all costs. So here are some topics you are going to want to avoid at all costs on your first date.

1. Their Past

Not everyone comes from a good home with a nice lawn and white picket fence. Your date might have, or they might not have. So, as with most things, let them tell you. Let them decide how open they want to be with you before you go digging.

No one wants to be interrogated, so keep your questions limited to who they are or what they’re doing now. If you genuinely want to know something about their past, then ask. But if they do not want to talk about it, respect their privacy and just move on.

2. Money

Finances are one of the most common causes of divorce, so there’s no reason to get a head start on that topic, especially on your first date. Questions about how much money your date has could imply that you’re looking for a check, and not a relationship.

If you must find out your date’s financial situation, ask questions based on what they own. Do they live alone or with a roommate? Do they only shop at thrift stores or are they dressed to the nines? You might not find anything out for certain, but questions like that might shed some light into what their bank account looks like.

3. Politics

Now more than ever, differences in political and social ideologies can make or break a relationship, so try not to bring up politics on your first date with someone. Even if you believe you both agree on major issues, avoid it all costs. You do not want to get in an argument with someone your trying to be with on a first date.

However, if you sense that you have wildly different views from one another let it be known sooner rather than later in the relationship. It’ll save you both a lot of time and energy in the long run.

4. Sex

Yeah, sex is cool, but have you tried talking first? Make sure you’re both looking for the same things out of your first date, whether a long-term relationship, a one-night thing, and anything in between.

Beyond that, try to keep it PG-13. Don’t be gross, don’t be a pig, and definitely don’t share anything about your past relations. Keep it nice, keep it friendly, and just hope for the best (whatever that may be for you).

5. Yourself

When asked questions, answer them as you please. But remember to ask them back! Don’t let the conversation lean too heavily on your. You’re both their to discover things about the other, so try your best to listen more than you speak.

Also, it’s up to you to keep an eye on how much you talk. Don’t rely on your date’s reaction, because while on the outside they seem interested and want you to talk more, on the inside they might be thinking how hard it’d be to sneak out through the bathroom window.
