News Flash: women have taken to the airwaves. Of course, we’re talking about podcasts. Gangs of females have opened Spotify, iHeartRadio, and Apple Music to share opinions, life lessons, and even a little mystery. We’ve selected a few unique podcasts that are entertaining for every type of woman.
Don’t let the title fool you. This podcast is not only for black women, its open to all women! Especially those who find themselves geeking out over the latest episodes of Power, The Handmaid’s Tale, or any and everything Disney related. The inclusive nature of the podcast is meant to promote nerdiness amongst women of color and allow them a space to embrace who they are.
With producer and host Jamie Broadnax, well-known film critic and CEO of the Black Girl Nerds Community, it’s easy to have a celebrity guest or two. McKaylay Wilkes, Tessa Thompson, and Crystal Kayiza have made appearances on the show to talk about politics and film; giving the show a serious and playful vibe.
Black Girl Nerds now has over 200 episodes, with a little something for everyone. Want to talk about student debt? Check out BGN Politics Episode 3: Fighting Student Debt with Anthony ONeal. Want to talk about the latest Disney News? Check out BGN #164: The Little Mermaid Nontroversy. It doesn’t matter which episode you choose, just pick one and enjoy!
Host(s): Karen Kilgraiff and Georgia Hardstark
Okay, let’s get a little dark for a second. Let’s talk about … MURDER! Crime enthusiasts Karen Kilgraiff and Georgia Hardstark met at a Halloween party during Karen’s tale of a pretty gruesome car crash she’d seen years ago. Not typically the party topic people hope for, but Georgia was all for it. And on that spooky night, they became friends forever.
In 2016, they decided to take their love of true crimes and mysteries and share them with the world. Thus, My Favorite Murder was born. The show shares not only the BFF’s favorite murder stories but also any hometown crimes that have been shared with them through their fans (otherwise known as Murderinos). It’s not all about guts and gore. It’s about comedy too! With Kilgraiff being a standup comedian and Hardstark as a T.V. writer, the two make a side-splitting, gut-wrenching duo.
Host(s): Ashley Milne-Tyte
Across the pond, lives journalist Ashely Milne-Tyte who is known for her award-winning podcast, The Broad Experience. Yes, yes, “broad” as in bimbo, floozy, or dame. It’s a term, not always meant in the kindest way, that dates back decades. But, Tyte is here to reclaim that word for the sake of female empowerment.
The Broad Experience focuses very heavily on the unfair opportunities and experience of the working women. Topics from race and class to working mom to sexual harassment are open for discussion. Tyte seeks to explore, and hopefully explain why women are not equally as successful in their field of business as men are. Is it because of social conventions? Maybe, it’s because having children has an effect on work performance. Which it may be, Tyte is committed to finding an answer and a solution.
Oftentimes, guests will co-host and share their personal stories about the ambitions of womanhood and motherhood, and the struggle to break the glass ceiling. Each episode is roughly 20 minutes long, but they are packed with intelligent and inspiring conversations for women and their careers; even the men could learn a thing or two from Ashley.
Host(s): Nicole Byer
Have you ever seen MTV’s Girl Code? No? Well, watch at least one and you’ll be introduced to Nicole Byer. The first and last of her kind! She’s an actress, a comedian and most importantly, she’s SINGLE. Her singleness is the topic of this podcast. Nicole is constantly asking herself and the public (specifically, men), why won’t you date me?
The podcast’s logline is “I’m funny, I got a fat ass and I love giving blowjobs”. It’s hilarious and a bit vulgar, but it’s what her audience wants. Along with, a long discussion about how to navigate romance in a technologically dependent landscape. Even the title of her episodes are reflective of that, “Managing Anxieties During Intimacy” and “The Joy of Being Alone”. Byer not only invites her audience to comment on her love life but celebrities as well. This way everyone is in on the joke!
Host(s): Anney Reese and Samantha McVey
Curiosity killed the cat, but if that cat knew about Stuff Mom Never Told You, it would have had a better chance at survival. We say that to say this, Reese and McVey answer all of the tough questions. Example: “How Much Is Virginity Worth?”, “Is Food the New Sex?”, “A Not-So-Scandalous Look At Sex, Politics and Women”. These are all episodes from the SMNTY podcast. Their goal is to create a conversation that includes the opinions of their audience and research about feminism.
The podcast is in connection with HowStuffWorks, “unbiased, reliable, easy-to-understand answers and explanations of how the world actually works.”. The website has created a list of audio podcasts with over 35 million downloads. BrainStuff, TechStuff, Stuff To Blow Your Mind, all podcasts that are available on iTunes. Much like the website, SMNTY focuses on informing the people!
