The Top 10 Reasons I Chose To Go To Tulane

There are so many amazing reasons I chose to go to Tulane. From the amazing location that you can’t beat to the ample amount of activities and things to do! Tulane University is definitely a great school to look at if you are an incoming freshman.

1. Location

There is truly nowhere like New Orleans; it’s the closest you can come to being in another country while still being in the United States. NOLA is European, it’s Southern, it’s Caribbean, and it’s Vietnamese. It’s truly an international city, surrounded on one side by a lake and the other a river at the southern end of Louisiana. It’s a city drenched in history, and was a literary mecca, which seemed like a good place for a literature and history buff like myself.

2. Balance

Tulane’s motto might as well be “work hard, play hard.” The number one party school in the nation, and an academically competitive liberal arts school, the balance between fun and scholarly rigor was exactly what I was looking for in a university. I wanted a place where it’s easy to branch out and make new friends, and somewhere that would allow me to continue the studious habits I developed in high school.

3. Liberal Arts

A lot of universities have recently begun putting pressure on their students to major in STEM fields. As someone who wanted a well rounded, reading and writing based education, I chose somewhere that doesn’t put a disproportionate level of focus and funding on engineering and science fields.

4. Programs

Tulane has some extremely highly ranked/prestigious programs. Some of those include: Latin American studies, finance and entrepreneurship, biomedical engineering, environmental studies, English, philosophy, and neuroscience. English, philosophy, neuroscience, and Latin American studies are all interests of mine. Because I am going in undecided, a school that is so strong in those programs was very attractive to me.

5. Size

At around 13,500 kids, Tulane is a perfectly mid sized school and is great for meeting new people. I was looking for a school where I would be able to meet new people everyday, but also see familiar faces on my way to class. The campus is also a great size. It stretches a few blocks, and there are huge quads and tons of green space, but you can walk most places in under ten minutes.

6. Weather

As New Orleans is basically in the tropics, it’s warm year round. Regular seventy degree January days trump the qualms I have about missing a deciduous fall.

7. Aid

While Tulane at ticket price is an inaccessibly expensive school, it is very generous with aid packages; one of the most generous I’ve seen in a top 50 school. Nearly everyone I know who attends Tulane has received a large merit based scholarship. I was awarded an extremely generous merit scholarship that made Tulane feasible for me. The office of financial aid is also extremely helpful when it comes to negotiating need based aid.

8. Fun

From Mardi Gras to Voodoo Fest, I’m looking forward to experiencing all NOLA has to offer in the way of culturally rich parties and festivals. Tulane itself is no slouch when it comes to awesome programming either. In past years, the university has hosted the comic John Mulaney, Childish Gambino, and many other famous performers.

9. Honors Program

I was fortunate enough to be offered a spot in the honors program at Tulane, and because of this, I am able to live in higher quality freshman dorms, get access to career advising and internship opportunities, and participate in classes and programming specifically for honors students. My invitation to honors definitely made Tulane a more attractive option for me, and I am so grateful for that.

10. Community Service

Tulane is huge on community involvement, and the university takes the fact that New Orleans is its home very seriously. The Tulane community gives back to the city in any way we can. Community service, on three different levels, is even a graduation requirement.
