10 Tips To Help Beat Your Breakout Prone Skin

Having breakouts is never fun, but when you have breakout-prone skin it can be even more frustrating to get clear skin. Whether you have breakouts your whole life, have acne from genetics, or have a couple pimples here and there, there are some steps you can take to minimize acne. Don’t let you breakout-prone skin get you down. We have some great tips to help you treat and hopefully beat your breakout-prone skin.

1. Wash your face daily

This may seem like an obvious one, but believe it or not, some people don’t properly wash their faces every day. Taking the time to seriously clean your face can make all the difference. Taking a shower and rubbing water on your face will not cut it. I’m talking about removing your makeup, rinsing your face with warm water, and using a proper facial cleanser to wash your face. The whole deal.

Doing this daily will keep your pores from clogging, your skin from becoming too oily and too dry, and reduce the number of breakouts tremendously.

2. Use natural cleansers

Natural or organic face cleaners totally change the game. Even for the toughest of skin, the harsh chemicals in non-natural cleaners can be really damaging to your face. It can cause redness, irritation, and even be the cause of certain acne.

Finding a natural cleanser that is perfect for you is a lot easier than you may think. When you walk down that skincare aisle at your local retailer, try to find natural cleansers that meet your immediate needs for acne, redness, or dullness of the skin as well as your skin goals such as softness, glow, or tone correcting.

3. Treat your skin with facemasks

Even during a solid daily skin routine, your skin could always use an extra boost every now and again. Facemasks are a great way to treat your skin. They are made with concentrated ingredients to help jump-start your skin for several different reasons such as healing, glow, moisture, calmness, and many more.

When it comes to facemasks, be sure not to cheap out. You don’t want to use an okay facemask that has harsh chemicals or nothing really that benefits the skin. It’s worth the few extra bucks to buy a nice, quality mask that will give you everything you need. If you can, go all-natural when buying a mask. These ingredients will work with your skin and provide a much better result.

You can also DIY your own facemask for as little as one ingredient, which you probably already have in your home. Most fruits, vegetables, and herbs are great for your skin.

4. Try a serum or oil

These are relatively new in popularity for skincare. As someone who just recently starting to use a hydrating oil, I have to say it has really elevated my skin. It does so much more than my moisturizer does. It hydrates and leaves my skin looking dewy and glowing but it also feels much softer and supple.

These can be great too to help keep skin hydrated all day without making it oily. It provides a great balance. I recommend using this at night, on clean skin, before you apply your moisturizer.

5. Wash your pillowcase and bedsheets

This one might seem like a myth. However, if you really think about it, we sleep on our pillows and bed sheets every night. The oils, dirt, and moisture from our hair, skin, and clothing can stick to our bed and be absorbed by the skin on our face. This can cause enlarged pores, blackheads, acne, and can also irritate and increase your already acne-prone skin.

It is recommended to wash or change out your sheets at least once a week. Your skin will thank you!

6. Change out your bath towel

Another thing you should wash is your bath towel. Not only are you using this every day to dry off, but the moisture from the towel can cause bacteria to grow. That’s not something you want to use to dry your face let alone the rest of your body. Get a nice fresh towel about once a week to make sure that after you are clean, you stay clean after your dry off.

Also, if you are using your bath towel during your skincare routine, be sure to pat dry your face. Rubbing your face with your towel can cause microabrasion that can irritate your skin and cause redness.

7. Steam your face

Steaming your face can open your pores, release the toxins, and making cleaning your face more effective by getting out all the gunk from all the nooks and crannies.

You’re probably wondering how you can steam your face regularly without going to the spa for facial or spending big money on a face steamer. There is actually a very easy way to DIY your own face steamer. If you have a small pot and a hand towel you are good to go. Simply boil the water and once it starts to bubble, cover your head with the towel and hover your head over the pot. Allow the steam to open your pores and cleanse your face.

8. Remove your makeup

It is important to remove your makeup not only before you wash your face but before you go to bed as well. This can clog your pores, irritate your skin, and cause it to become overly oily or dry. Your skin needs to breathe, so please don’t sleep in your makeup!

It’s recommended to use makeup remover wipes as the first step. Remember not to rub too hard with these but to gently wipe away. You can also use cleansing oils or creams on cotton pads to remove the makeup. Whatever works best for you and your skin as well as being effective in removing the makeup. Be sure to wash your face with your face cleanser after removing the makeup.

9. Try micellar water

If you haven’t ever used micellar water before, it is a great thing to add to your skincare routine, especially if you wear makeup on the reg. Micellar water is a clear liquid that cleans your face and picks up dirt, makeup, and access oils. It pretty much wipes away anything that the makeup wipes or cleansing oil leave behind. When you’re skin is this clean, it prevents breakouts from forming.

I recommend using the micellar water after you remove your makeup and before you cleanse your face. This way, it kills any bacteria and picks up any leftover dirt or makeup on your face. It also leaves as a fresh base ready for cleansing.

10. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize

Moisturizing is the best thing you can do for your skin. It really is the ultimate way to prevent further breakouts. Moisturing keeps the skin hydrated, supple, smooth, and balanced. After all the daily skincare routine, the cleansing, the facemasks, and the steaming remember to moisturize your face really well. If you can, use an all-natural moisturizer to be the most gentle and effective. If you take anything away from this list please remember to moisturize!

If you take care of your skin, your skin will take care of you. Which of these skin tips are you going to try to beat your acne-prone skin? Let us know in the comments below!
