10 Tips Sorority Girls Want You To Be Aware Of Before Rush

If I could give any piece of advice to any girl considering going through rush I would say, “You were made to do hard things so believe in yourself.” Sorority rush can be draining, especially talking to so many girls. Since it’s going to be virtual this year, it also makes it even more difficult to really get to know each house. Joining a sorority was one of the best decisions I have made during college thus far and I would encourage anyone thinking about joining to rush and just see what happens! Here are some helpful tips before you start sorority recruitment!

1. Go into every house with an open mind.

It is so easy to look up on the Internet a sorority’s Greek Ranking and then already decide which sorority you want to be a part of before going into recruitment. I would really suggest that you start a rush with no knowledge of what every house is really about. It’s good to start with an open mind because if you start listening to other people talk about “Oh this sorority is the best or it’s ranked the lowest”, you’ll already walk in with a bad attitude and you never know you could be missing out on your people! A house’s “ranking” shouldn’t matter to you; it’s all about whether you connect with the girls and see yourself being a part of a certain house.

2. Be who you are.

I know it sounds kind of cheesy, but it’s true. Sororities are talking to 100s of girls the first day and they don’t want to keep hearing the same answers to every question. Don’t try to answer questions with things you think they’d want to hear; just showcase your personality and be honest! Sororities want to know the real you, not who you think you should be. You’re more likely to have more success and stand out during rush if you are sincere and are just yourself! It is easy to tell when someone is just pretending to be someone they’re not to impress others.

3. You’re going to be cut from houses.

I remember being super upset that I was cut from one house that I thought I really saw myself being a part of. However, I think you end up where you are supposed to be. You shouldn’t immediately quit rush if the second day you get cut from the house you wanted. Getting cut from houses doesn’t mean you aren’t pretty enough or your personality wasn’t good enough, it could just mean simply that the girls didn’t think you’d be the right fit in the house. Stick through rush until the very end and if you are still unhappy, then maybe consider dropping and trying again another time.

4. It’s okay to be nervous but don’t put so much pressure on yourself.

We want the conversation to go well too because we want to find potential new members of our house! No one is going to shame you because you’re “too nervous” because we are too. It’s nervewracking talking to so many people so sororities understand that. However, don’t put so much pressure on yourself to have every conversation go perfectly. People are going to make mistakes on both ends so just stay calm and realize that things don’t have to go flawlessly!

5. Avoid talking about partying and drinking.

It’s best to avoid the subjects of partying and drinking during rush because that’s not what sororities are all about. Yes, partying and drinking is most likely a part of many people’s college experiences, but we don’t want to make it seem like that’s what Greek life is all about. It is a part of Greek life, but there is so much more to it; there is sisterhood, philanthropy, chapter meetings and so much more. We already have to try to avoid these topics in our conversation so it’s best to not bring them up when you’re first meeting a sorority for the first time.

6. Be kind to every girl in every chapter.

Even if you don’t like a chapter, it is still common courtesy to be nice to everyone. Sororities put a lot of time and energy into recruitment so be grateful! We know not everyone is going to like every chapter, but it’s important to still have respect and at least make some effort in a conversation. It will make you be viewed negatively if you are rude or ignorant of some girls in any chapter. Just be nice!

7. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

The only way you can really find out if a sorority is right for you is if you ask questions. We are open to hearing everyone’s questions and in fact, we encourage it! It shows people’s interest and excitement if they ask questions about the chapter. Even if you think a question is stupid, still ask it!

8. Avoid talking about another chapter when you’re talking to a girl from a different house.

If you’re in one chapter, don’t bring up a different sorority. Just focus on the chapter you’re in. It’s good to learn about every chapter before you make your decision anyway!

9. Wear something cute, but comfortable!

It’s hard on virtual recruitment to really see what everyone is wearing, but it’s still important to look somewhat polished. Wear an outfit you feel comfortable and confident in! If you don’t feel confident in what you’re wearing, it will come across so make sure you wear something that speaks to you and your sense of style.

10. Make sure the sorority you choose aligns with your morals and values.

Joining a sorority is a big commitment. Pick one with girls that also share some of the same values as you. If you don’t feel like they do, then it’s best to not join. Not everyone finds their right fit right away!

Sorority rush is tiring on both ends, but it’s important to stay positive and try your best when you go into every house. Eventually, everything will work out the way it’s supposed to; keep your head up!
