Tips for Making the College Transition

College sounds very intimidating. You will get involved in many activities: extracurriculars, parties, sports, and maybe even a relationship. Prepare yourself for all there is to come with this college transition; although unexpected circumstances may arise while you are there. You should prepare yourself for those that you know will come your way, such as rigorous courses and time management. College is going to be the next big chapter of your life, make it worthwhile. Always remember the main reason you’re there is to get an education. Before you go, there are a few tips I want you to keep in mind for making the college transition.

Respect Yourself

You must know yourself and your worth. The way you treat yourself and respect yourself is the way people will treat and respect you.

Create Your Personal Brand

Think about ONE thing that you want to be known for. This could be your legacy. You create what people know you for.

Make Friends

My father always said,

“Show me your friends and I will show you your character.”

Your friends are a representation of yourself. If you are a quiet, smart, and self-driven type of person, find someone who is similar. When these friendships do fail, seek other friendships. Remember, not everyone is your friend. My freshman year, I lost many relationships, however, people will come and go in your life. Those who choose to stay will probably remain in your life for the long haul. Always keep yourself open to new friendships and relationships, but do not disclose too much, unless you are 100% comfortable. You’ll quickly learn that not everyone is trustworthy.

Don’t Stress

Our bodies and minds do not operate well with stress, so it’s best to avoid it at all times. When problems arise, don’t be too impulsive. Relax and then make a decision. Seek advice from available resources on campus, such as advisors or upperclassmen, and from your parents.

Stay True to Yourself

Word travels very quickly on a college campus. This goes back to building your personal brand; people tend to remember your name through the negative things that they have heard about you. Whatever your friends are doing, stay true to yourself. You should feel okay leaving any situation that makes you uncomfortable. Peer pressure is just as prevalent in college, if not more so, than in high school.  Do not try to fit into the whole “hookup” college culture that has become widespread on many college campuses if you are not ready for the emotional consequences. Be yourself. Be the best YOU that you can be.
