A person’s first out of college job is the ultimate definer of their hard work, passion, and talent. It is very important to be on top of your career because it is crucial that your hard work does get recognized. Young adults that wish to go somewhere in life go to college so as to have their dreams come true. In today’s economy everyone needs all the help they can get to get ahead professionally.
Networking is essential for you to get the proper contacts to ensure that you are given a seat the table. By knowing someone who works in the industry that you wish to work in you can get yourself settled. Networking entails getting informed about job fairs or events of your field of interest that are taking place. If you are lucky you can even land an internship with a good mentor who can guide you into the industry that you are hoping to get into.
Your resume, though it will not be everything that an employer will be looking for, is the first thing employers see you through. It is where all your professional work, internship and academic experience is written down. So please make sure that your resume highlights your best skills and experiences. Universities have resources where you can go have your resume reviewed and edited. Or maybe a kind friend might be willing to polish up your resume.
Read books or look online, what are the companies that are currently doing well. What are the cities that have the most jobs that you are looking for? What are the best entry-level jobs that can help you get you foot at the door? Doing your research will ensure that you have the best starting point so as to ensure your success.
Go to job fair, networking events, present yourself to people, and introduce yourself in the best way possible. Let others get to know you so that they will want to contact you later. People always appreciate those that take the first step.
Make yourself as presentable as possible. Dress to impress so that you look the part. Everyone makes judgements and why not try to make someone think positively about yourself. When going for an interview make sure that you are looking your best this means wearing your dress pants and blazer.
The one absolute thing that you must always try to nail is the interview. The interview is what will make or break your potential job employment. When attending an interview you must remember that there is no need to be afraid. It is definitely okay to be nervous but no need to be afraid. First thing the interviewer will ask you will be to introduce yourself so have a mental list of what you are going to say. Afterwards the questions start to be asked. Try to answer each question as efficiently, professionally, and complete as possible. The last thing an interviewer will ask you will be if you have any questions. Of course it is necessary that you research the company you are interviewing with so that you sound interested in the company and not just seem like you are looking for a job. Though in reality everyone is looking for a job, I mean who like to be unemployed, it will make you stand out from the others that are being interviewed.
Allowing to show to a future employer that you are interested will ensure that they will give you more information about the job. The best way to show interest is by asking questions. Aside from asking questions you can also make yourself available by passing out business cards, your resume, or email address.
Remember that the job hunt is no easy task. There will be ups and downs along the way but remember to keep you head up.
When you can’t find any job fairs, networking events, or places where you can turn in your resume you can look online. There are a tons of great job search engines like Indeed, CareerBuilder, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, or Simply Hired. These are website that can inform you about jobs that are available in the area.
When you are recently out of college it will be very discouraging when you do not heard back from an employer or are simply unemployed. But remember as the saying goes, “it’s not about how hard you can hit but how many times you can get up.”
