Traveling can be stressful when worried about money, transportation, and packing. Don’t let your skin and skincare stress you out this go around. We have a handful of helpful tips and tricks that will keep your skin looking healthy, happy, and hydrated.
Healthy skin starts before you leave. If you haven’t been caring for your skin, it will not be at its peak when you travel. Before you start your travels, be sure to extra great care of your skin. Making sure you stay hydrated and eat foods that make your skin glow from the inside out. Travel can truly take a toll on the appearance of your skin. Prepare your skin the day before with everything it needs to succeed.
Climate has a huge effect on how your skin is functioning. Your skin is used to working in your usual elements, but when you travel and go from your air quality and humidity to the plane which has the driest air known to mankind, to whatever your knew climate is. All of these changes in a short period of time can shock your skin. If you’re traveling to a place that is cold and dry bring your favorite hydrating products. If you’re traveling somewhere warm and humid, your pores are more prone to being clogged from sweat and dirt. Opt for oil-free products.
You may think that washing your skin twice a day would strip the skin of the natural oils your skin is producing to keep it hydrated. You would be correct if you were going to use harsh cleansers, however, you don’t necessarily need to use a cleanser every time you wash. If you want to wash your skin twice a day try using your cleanser in the evening. Use lukewarm water to rinse the skin and follow with a toner. You can also double cleanse at night with an oil cleanser followed by a traditional face wash.
If you’re prone to dry flakey skin, ensure that you’re supplying your skin with as much moisture as possible. The biggest mistake we can make with our skin is by not giving it as much moisture as possible. When tailoring your skincare routine for travel you must bring products that are going to work overtime for your skin. Moisturizing creams, oils, and serums packed with hyaluronic acid, aloe, and other hydrating ingredients are the ones for you!
It may seem a bit boujee or even intimidating to pull out a face mask in the middle of a flight, but if the skin calls, you answer. The air that circulates in the plane is all recycled air with zero moisture in it. This will dry out your skin almost immediately. When you’re on the plane make sure you’re staying hydrated even if you have to use the bathroom 10 times. Store a couple of skincare items in your personal item. Chapstick, undereye masks, hand cream, and a sheet mask are all musts in my backpack. If you’re nervous about sporting your mask on the plane, the best time to pull it out is in the middle of the flight. At this point everyone is asleep, and the flight attendants have made their rounds. Take the next 30 minutes to care for yourself and rock that mask.
We know one of the best parts of traveling is getting to enjoy the food, however, that might send your skin into a spiral. Remember that when you’re traveling your skin is already experiencing ample stress. Try to keep a couple of healthy snacks in your Airbnb or bag. Small fruits, veggies, and nuts are easy to store and perfect for quick snacks in between delicious new experiences.
Always Always Always. Need I say more? I know it’s like beating a dead horse at this point. Protecting your skin from the sun is imperative to having healthy, glowing skin. Different countries and even different parts of the same country have different UV indexes meaning the sun is stronger in different areas. Add an SPF to your morning routine. You may even want to reapply if you’re going to be outside for an extended amount of time.
We talked about hydrating your skin properly, now it’s time to remind you to hydrate your body. So much of our skin health is attributed to what we put into our body first. Staying hydrated and drinking enough water will make your skin glow from within. Water will even help with digestion, your nails, hair, and appetite.
Do you know the real reason why you’re supposed to pat your skin instead of wiping it dry? The reason is more important to your skin health than you think. When you wipe dry you are pulling at the skin. This is damaging especially after you just cleansed. No premature wrinkles over here, please! When wiping your skin dry you’re also removing a lot of the natural moisture from your skin. Lastly, think about what you’re drying your skin with. Your average bathroom towel sits there and collects bacteria from the elements and even other potentially touching it. Pat your face dry to keep the moisture and stay wrinkle-free!
This is a tough call. We all want to look our best on vacation for those IG-worthy snaps, however, that may not be the best decision for our skin. Before applying a full beat consider the climate and your current skin troubles. Remember that if you don’t wear makeup, there won’t be too much to take off that night causing less stress for your skin. If you’re having some breakouts, consider light coverage that won’t clog your skin too much. Even just applying brows and mascara can change your face completely. Take it easy on your skin.
We all know traveling can be hectic and stressful for so many reasons. Don’t let your skin stress you out. With a little bit of research and planning your skin will be glowing and cooperating with you for all of your travels. Your skin is the largest organ in your body! You better take care of it.
