Movies and shows have been dominated by males for quite some time, especially when it comes to action or fighting. However, women are making their way up the ranks and kicking ass while doing it. Some films and shows are putting women as the leads and make them badasses at the same time! Women are not just pretty things. They are standing up, kicking ass, and setting examples for women and girls around the world. Here are ten times women kicked ass in movies and television.
The film Enough starring Jennifer Lopez has one kickass scene of revenge at it’s finest. Jennifer Lopez’s character Slim is a hard-working mother in an abusive relationship. Her husband is a wealthy contractor and her life seems perfect until you get a closer look at her abusive husband. To save herself and her daughter, Slim goes on the run. However, Mitch does not give up easily and hunts her down. Slim trains and prepares in a self-defense class that is ultimately put to the test. An epic showdown to save herself and her daughter takes place as Slim realizes that Mitch will never stop abusing her. Slim fights Mitch to the death in a strategic and methodically planned attack in his house. Lopez gives viewers and women hope in overcoming an abusive relationship. In an intensely satisfying scene of hitting back and prevailing over abuse, Slim finds herself taking back her life and protecting what matters most to her; her daughter and life.
Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska stars in the 2019 Charlie’s Angels film. These three badass women are detectives that must protect everyone against a dangerous piece of technology, that if in the wrong hands, can be used as a weapon. Kristen, Naomi, and Ella Balinska have some kick-ass scenes, more so, the final fight scene. However, this film is not just about physical fighting. The use of brains, quick thinking, and putting to use what you have to stop the evil-doing is very much a part of ass-kicking in this film. Being a detective is not just fighting, but ultimately figuring out who is doing the evil, how, and where. These three ladies come together and use what they each know best to save the day.
Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot showcases the epitome of badass women. Diana is a strong warrior who sets out to help fight in a conflict in the outside world. Diana stumbles upon her powers and learns what her point in life is. She finds her destiny, all while fighting the bad guys, attempting to rid evil, and using all she has learned to take on the toughest battle. However, for Diana, she is trained to be unconquerable. A strong female lead who kicks ass and attempts to help others for good is the definition of a kickass female.
Starring Michelle Rodriguez, Girlfight is a story about a girl, Diana who trains to be a boxer. Diana does not tell her father of her training or what she is doing. Instead, she trained and boxed in secret. She succeeds and blazes the path for other female boxers and other girls who wish to do something that is deemed a male sport or career. Diana not only kicks ass boxing, but she overcomes the gender stereotype by proving she is more than what she wears or her gender. She is a strong, capable female who can do anything a male does.
The Television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer stars Sarah Michelle Gellar. Buffy is a high school teenager who is given the ability to fight vampires off. Buffy does amazing fighting or acrobatic moves to slay the unwanted vampires and keep her community safe. Buffy gives up a normal teenage life to keep her family and friends protected, but she also shows little fear when facing off with these dangerous creatures.
Michonne is a strong lead female character on the television series The Walking Dead. She is portrayed by Danai Gurira. Michonne comes off as a silent but deadly type. She keeps people at arm’s length for a reason, but she sure can wield a sword to save her life. She has an interesting back story that explains her nature, but she is also a woman who is not afraid to stand up and protect herself and others she is working alongside. While Michonne has overcome extreme hardships, she does eventually open up to others, but at the end of her storyline, it played a role in her untimely demise. However, nothing beats seeing Michonne kick-ass fighting off zombies and those who posed a threat to her group of people.
Kill Bill stars, Uma Thurman, as one of the most badass fighting queens of the film industry. Uma Thurman plays a character named The Bride. She was gunned down by her former boss, Bill during her wedding. After she emerges from a coma several years later, the Bride sets out to kill Bill before he can kill her. Kill Bill is influenced by a Japanese film titled Lady Snowblade. The Bride uses a blade as she fights to save her life and take Bill out. She faces deadly assains and ultimately kicks major ass in the film. A role that shows women can be a force to be reckoned with.
The film Kick-Ass stars a young Chloe Grace Moretz as Hit-Girl. Hit-Girl is a young vigilante that was trained by her father. She is skilled and she can take people down rather easily. Hit-Girl is a tough girl who isn’t afraid to face danger or death. She can be seen doing various acrobatic moves as she slices and dices her way through the bad guys. Hit-Girl is a badass little girl who kicks ass and lets others know to not underestimate her.
Jennifer Garner portrays this Marvel Comic Book character Elektra. Elektra works for a corporation known as the Hand. She is given targets to kill and without question she does. However, she is given the assignment to kill a man and his prodigy daughter. Elektra begins to have a conscience and is not sure about terminating their lives. The Hand sends in another assassin to do the job and Elektra must fight against him to keep the man and the daughter safe. Elektra has fighting scenes jammed pack with all the moves you’d expect to see in an action film. Elektra kicks ass and questions what she feels is not right, something some people have a hard time doing. Elektra not only has killer fighting moves, but the film addresses the ability to think for one’s self rather than acting because someone says to do something.
Jennifer Lawrence portrays Katniss Everdeen, a teenager who volunteers herself in the place of her sister to enter a game that ultimately means death. Two people from each district must enter the game and survive in a dome set up to challenge all the participant’s instincts. It is a game that pits kids against kids, promotes murder, and provides entertainment for those watching. Katniss is skilled in the bow and arrow and must use her witts to outlast the rest of the surviving children from other districts. Katniss outwits and uses her skills to ultimately play the game and win the hunger games. Katniss combines two things that all women and girls alike should have, brains and the ability to kick ass when needed.
