5 Thoughts From A Small Town Student Living In Boston
Are you from a small town in upstate something-or-other, but somehow found yourself in BOSTON for college? Yeah, me too. When I meet another small town student, it’s an instant bond over these 5 thoughts.
1. Your freshman class on campus is larger than the entirety of your school district back home.
You could have been the valedictorian or salutatorian of your class but that doesn’t really mean anything, considering you had what? Like, 40 people in your graduating class. Just don’t tell anyone how big your school really was unless they ask.
2. Nobody else from your high school is going to the same university as you.
The majority of kids you graduated with are going to state schools or commuting to their school. There are also those few kids that choose to go to Florida or California to get away from the all too familiar aspects of your small town.
3. Forget going to your school, people have never even HEARD of your school.
The majority of schools in Boston are fairly well known, but people in your town have never even heard of your school unless it is Harvard. They can guess where Boston College and Boston University are but if you go to Northeastern University, you may get a question such as “Is that in Illinois?” Like really people? NorthEASTERN University.
4. You can’t get over how big some of your courses are.
You’re used to knowing all of your teachers on a fairly personal level, there were only a small number of students that each teacher had. You’re still surprised when the professors don’t know everyone’s name. I’m a small town student from a class of about 40, everyone knew my name.
5. People don’t believe you when you say some things about your hometown.
I live in upstate NY and people in Boston act like they’ve never seen snow. They also are convinced I live in Canada, but that’s a story for another time. Just because you’re not a small town student, doesn’t mean I’m not!
